Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Rich Allo

Tell Us about:

Your latest single you have released:

My latest single “You” has been in the works since February 2025. It was written spontaneously on a cold winter’s night while I was playing my piano in my flat. It was quite an emotional and vulnerable experience, not to mention inspiring, so I knew it wasn’t a song I couldn’t let slip through my fingers. I quickly recorded a demo while improvising lyrics and that demo more or less became the final song, bar a few lyric changes. But the melody and ambience was always there. Lyrically, I think the song is about trying to find the balance between staying in control and not descending into a meltdown. I think we all go through that experience and it can be pretty scary.

Your favourite lyric in this song:

My favourite lyric arrives just before the song explodes into a huge instrumental rock breakdown. “Don’t lose it… it’s just what we need.” It carries a subtle emotional contradiction: the words sound supportive, but underneath is the fear that losing it, in whatever capacity that could be, would be disastrous.

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

I love these questions because often album tracks are overlooked! One of my personal favourites is a song from my latest album “Only Me”, released in April 2024. The song is titled “Set Apart” and taps into feeling insecure and trying to justify to yourself why people like you. It came out of a conversation I had with one of my best friends, so I hold it very close. Since its release I’ve performed it at more or less every show. The piano part is also very fun to play on stage.

Your favourite song to play live:

My favourite song to play live is probably “Life Song”, one of my first tracks I ever wrote. I had the amazing opportunity to record this in Tony Visconti’s studio in Kingston upon Thames in 2017. I consider it a massive step in my development as an artist, as I came to understand the studio environment and production. It’s one of those songs that builds and builds, has a soaring chorus which the audience can sing along to, and my band bring an energy to it that’s just incredible.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Most of my songs are written very quickly, but there are some that are stubborn! I’m very glad my attention span didn’t give up on “Someone Up There’s Got Something Against Me.” I would say this was the first true “rock song” I wrote. It has lots of contrasting sections with different time signatures, and I spent a long time making sure that the lyrics said everything I wanted to about describing an existential crisis.

One of your previous tracks you would recommend for first time listeners of your music and why?

I would recommend “Blood-Red Butterflies”. This is the closing track from my album “How To Not Fall Apart”, released November 2021, and expresses nothing but euphoric joy after coming out of a dark place. It has a relentless energy and ambience that I would like to think would help brighten anyone’s day.

Dream collaboration:

Keane have always had a big influence on me and my music. Their lead singer Tom Chaplin has the best voice out there today, and is also a wonderful guy, so I would have to say him!

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

I’m always nervous before a show, especially when I’m playing a new song for the first time, but it’s always overruled by excitement. If you’re confident in what you’re doing, you have nothing to fear.

The track that is most fun to play live:

It sounds strange, but the most fun songs for me are the most depressing ones! You can really tap into a sad emotion and share it with the audience and, if you move them, even better. I have a track called “Brevity” which is a seven minute exploration into the darker sides of life, and this is great fun to play.

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

I like to travel light so you won’t find me carrying very much if possible. Guitar picks are number one! I’m always dropping them!

Describe your fans in three words:

Genuine, loyal and emotionally switched on.

A song released in the last few years by an artist or band you wish you had written:

I love The War On Drugs, particularly for their emotional intensity and guitar genius. They have an amazing track called Harmonia’s Dream which channels everything I want my music to: euphoria, introspection and escape.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

We are currently rehearsing for some exciting shows and working on some of my new tracks which is always fun, but an experience you walk into blindly! Stay tuned for some dates, in my hometown of Jersey and the UK!
