Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of George Michael and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.
Freeek – George Michael
Why did you choose this particular video?
I remember this video having controversy around it when I was a kid and watching it now I can see why. However, I still wanted to mention it as it was around the time a lot of bands were entering this ‘futuristic’ video theme and some of the shots in this video are some of the best that I have seen and really depicts futuristic vives.
So, what is the narrative?
It is the future, there is a lot of ease and freeness in how you can express your sexuality.
Favourite parts of the video?
The first thing we are going to talk about it the use of CGI to create the futuristic city – so many bands were doing this around the beginning of the noughties but this music video really captured it in an interesting way. You know the narrative is going to have a dark element to it due to the dirty green colours and the yellow that builds this amazing aura around this world we are entering.
The graphics are really fascinating in this video. Even in the small parts you saw on television as a kid, the graphics always amazed me. The sense in the white background, if you look at the graphics around the dancers they are really fascinating and well before their time The 3D rotation is very clever and creates this sort of orb and trap into this world that you are entering.

Finally, the most powerful scenes – the close up of the red outfit. This was the main part I remembered of the video. The red ‘beating’ background creates a pulse to the video and starts to give depth to it. When you see the rest of the outfit the camera does a sort of vibration shake which again gives another level and depth to both the video and the tech of the future in the video.
