New Album Deep Dive – INTERVIEW – Hang Ten Colors To Catch The Sun, ttwig

Welcome to a feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to ttwig to find out about the album Hang Ten Colors To Catch The Sun.

Hello ttwig, nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!

Hi! Nice to meet you as well. I am Josh. Originally from NY. I love making music, am super hyped on this record & could really use a coffee right now.

Tell us about the new album, ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’?

Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun is a sonic journey & universe. Tunes inspired by ocean waves, turning tides & epic sunsets. There’s a message in each song & a corresponding feeling.

Favourite track on the album and why?

Ride the Wave is my favorite at the moment. It just really captures a specific feeling really well & the outro is epic.

  1. Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?

I love recording. These songs all came during the same inspiration explosion as my debut, Mindless Meadow. I was in the zone during lockdown & was just churning songs out. The flow state was real at that time.

What inspired the album name, ‘Hang Ten Colours to Catch the Sun’?

When I first moved to Los Angeles in 2019, I went out one night to a bar in Venice. It was a surf themed bar. It was a pretty quiet night if I recall correctly. I went to go for a whiz & when I entered the bathroom I noticed the walls were covered with cool surf posters.

One of them read: Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun. I thought it was such an awesome combination of words, so I wrote it down. Turned out to be the perfect name for this collection of songs.

Tell us about the idea behind the album cover?

In November of 2020, I took a solo trip to San Francisco to visit a friend. Shoutout my 2016 Subaru, Betty one time!!! After my trip, I took my sweet time (10 hours) to cruise the PCH back down to LA. I had recently ended a long term relationship and was going through a lot of self reflection & life ponderings. The metaphor of waves has always made so much sense to me. As much as we yearn to be in control, we aren’t. the ocean doesn’t adhere to the will of man. It is wild. It is free. It just is. If life is an ocean, you just gotta ride the wave. And then: a gift/sign from the universe; I pulled over to witness the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen in my life on the coast of Big Sur. This is the 35mm photo (with some color alterations) that became the front cover. All of the art for this record was taken on 35mm and color edited afterwards to match the colors I see when the music is playing.

What one of your songs on the new album do you think will be the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?

I Wanna Be A Dog is a tough one to sing live but I am up for the challenge!

Why should people listen to ‘Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun’?

Cause it has the same nutritional value as 1000 bowls of broccoli.
