Magic of the Music Video – George Michael Month – As

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of George Michael and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

As – George Michael feat. Mary J Blige

Why did you choose this particular video?

I quite like this song and thought it would be really fun to look at a music video of one of the many collaborations that he did. Also As has some fascinating editing techniques that are really great that I felt that I had to talk about it.

So, what is the narrative?

George Michael enters a night club where there are many versions of him and Mary J Blige all dancing and having a good time.

Favourite parts of the video?

The best bit of the video is the way that the whole club is full of many different George Michaels and Mary J Blige’s. It is so clever and such a unique editing technique. Each George or Mary has their own personality, the part where they are both merged on the dance floor blows my mind it is so good. It makes you want to look at the video over and over again to see all the characters.

The colours brown, black and grey are used predominantly as the colour palette in the video and it is a colour I wish was used so much more. It gives this sleek, suave and sophisticated look to the video. It is simple but so effective.

The camera editing on this video is also very slick. You cannot tell that a lot of the time that there are edits as it feels like it is one continuous shot throughout. You can only really notice it when it does a fast pan to a different part of the video.
