Magic of the Music Video – Busted Month – Year 3000

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Busted and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

Year 3000 – Busted

Why did you choose this particular video?

Whilst I am not a great fan of this song it has a really iconic music video and it is one that everyone will always think of when they think of Busted. I could say that out of all the music videos, it is one of their most creative videos.

So, what is the narrative?

The Busted boys neighbour has built a time machine and has taken them to the year 3000 to see what the future holds for life and the band.

Favourite parts of the video?

The one thing that is truly fantastic in this music video is the variation of different styles of animation that is used. 2D is the most popular but there are elements of 3D and stop motion if you watch the video really carefully. It is really effective and makes this video really iconic.

There are lots of quick, fast editing in this video that makes this a real visual feast. It is edited in a way that makes it exciting and extremely fun to watch. The quick shots reel you into the world of the narrative and the future that is depicted.

Finally, the slow motion and sped up editing is used throughout to create some really fun parts of the videos such as getting into the time machine, jumping about and sneaking into the concert that is for their future selves.
