The festive period is here and there are so many shows that are available for audiences to go and watch! Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to lots of different shows and performers about what they have in store for this time of year! Today we find out all about the show that The Overtones are touring over the festive period. The tour wraps up on the 10th December and I spoke to Mike to find out all about the show.
Hello tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hey. My name’s Mike. I’m 45 years old, married to Kerry and I have a 5 year old son. I live in London and I’m one of the founding members of The Overtones. Oh and my beard is fast turning very very grey.
What is the show that you are bringing to the stage in this Festive season?
This festive season is very special for us as it marks the start of a year of events as we celebrate an incredible 15 years together. We are starting this in the best possible way as we are back with a nationwide Christmas Party Tour – which for many of our loyal fans always signifies the official start of Christmas!
Tell us all about your role in the show?
We all have our roles within the group. Organisation, social media, shows, management and so many more elements to fulfil. We’re not, just the band, we’re the management and the record label. It’s great to the masters of our own destiny after so many years of being under the umbrella of a major label.
Will there be a bit of festivity in your show?
Of course! We are changing it up a little this year to tell the story of our last 15 years in music but you can certainly expect a big night out! It’s going to be a party from start to finish with lots of energy, fun and plenty of festive cheer and Christmas sparkle! We always say that we want our audience to leave the outside world behind. All the troubles that often make life challenging have no place in our show. We have a responsibility to give people the best night possible and if they don’t leave the theatre with a big smile on their face and a song in their hearts then we’ve failed. And for us, failure just isn’t an option.
What are your favourite things about the festive season and why?
For me, it’s all about family and those little Christmas traditions that make it so special and give the festive season its magic. Putting up the tree with carols playing in the background, mince pies in the oven (that cosy feeling never gets old) and, of course, the guilty pleasure of a Christmas movie or two! In my house it’s Home Alone and Elf!
This time of year the venues tend to be a bit busier as well – do you find that the audience changes at all?
Our audiences always come ready to sing and dance the night away all year round but there’s certainly an extra sense of celebration at Christmas time. There’s a palpable joy in the air and it’s honestly completely infectious. People are quicker to get on their feet to dance too. It’s just wonderful.
What advice would you give for people performing around the festive season?
As amazing as it is to be doing the job we do, especially at Christmas, it can be hard to be away from loved ones. I certainly struggle. But I’d say to anyone who struggles with that, that you have to allow the joy to come too. Enjoy yourself, it’s ok to have fun. You can miss your family and still have the best time. Don’t let these beautiful moments pass you by without soaking it all up.
What is the best thing about a night at your show for the audience?
It’s that ‘good times’ feeling that keeps our fans coming back year after year. We have so much fun on stage and there’s a real genuine connection with the audience. We genuinely don’t see our shows as us on stage being the stars and audience sitting there watching in awe. We see it as we are partying together. We all contribute to a slightly different show every night, audience and band. We also promise an evening of fun, feel good music, flawless harmonies and synchronised dance moves – that’s The Overtones magic!
