Magic of the Music Video – Busted Month – You Said No

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Busted and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

You Said No – Busted

Why did you choose this particular video?

I think this was one of the first songs that I liked by Busted so I felt that is was only right to talk about it. The music video was one that was always on the music channels when I was growing up as well so I have watched this video a lot.

So, what is the narrative?

The Busted guys are at a BMX competition competing against another trio and trying to win the affection of the ladies.

Favourite parts of the video?

The first thing to point out about this video is that it feels like a ‘very American style’ sort of vision. I feel that this was intentional to try and reach international markers. The skate park, the editing, it all feels very American in the style – the certain edits hit the beat and the vision feels very different to the UK. It also has essences of In Too Deep Music Video by Sum 41 as well as hinting at games such as Matt Hoffman and Tony hawks that were popular at this time.

The graphics play a really important part in the video. It brings the whole ‘skate park’ to life as it has elements of computer games that were popular at that time. It also helps add a level of depth to the narrative of the music video and it helps explain the story to the audience really simply.

The colour grade is really interesting in this music video as well as it is very dark. It focusses a lot on the dark greens, blues and greys. That is again why it feels a sense of American to it as it has a colour scene that seems to emphasise this theme.
