I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’
It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.
Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.
I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are talking about a podcast episode that goes further behind the scenes of a show.
Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life –
Episode: The Big Bran Hypothesis
Podcast: The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast
If the pandemic did one thing right, it was to accelerate the amount of podcasts that are available to listen to. You can pretty much get a podcast for almost every topic. Something that has increased dramatically, and has also increased in the past year alone, it shows that go behind the scenes or look in depth at television shows episode by episode. This Is Us, The Middle and Will and Grace are just some that I can think of off the top of my head that have started in the past year or so. Another television show that has had a recent rewatch podcast released is The Big Bang Theory.
“It is an interesting podcast and recommend you give it a listen…”
Last year, I read the behind the scenes book about the show. Being a fan of the programme, I found it gave a fantastic insight as it has interviews with all the production team and actors which made it very detailed. This meant I had no interest to listen to the podcast, I felt fulfilled.
Saying that, one day I was curious and decided to give it a listen. I wasn’t expecting a lot because I learnt a lot from the book, then I started to listen and realised the author of the book was the podcast presenter – this made a HUGE difference.
Whilst they speak about each episode in depth, it expands on the information of the book which makes it really refreshing and doesn’t leave others behind.
In the episode The Big Ben Hypothesis, it goes into depth of the episode after the pilot and talks to the Director of the episode Mark Cendrowski. It goes into depth of the difficulties of using one set of stairs to record more then one level of the apartment. It also goes into depth as to how to make a heavy package look realistic.
“I started to listen and realised the author of the book was the podcast presenter – this made a HUGE difference...”
It also has some fun parts in the podcast where they discuss the mini jokes that they played on the actors whilst filming. It also discusses how you have to adapt to direct actors and what you learn from years of doing it.
Another important thing it talks about is the importance of an ensemble cast and making it work and that The Big Bang Theory were unique as they had this close relationships from the start.
It is an interesting podcast and recommend you give it a listen, especially if you are a fan of the show.
