Magic of the Music Video – Machine Gun Kelly Month – The Break Up

Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.

I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.

Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.

This month we are delving into the world of Machine Gun Kelly (or MGK, whatever you prefer) and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.

The Break Up – Machine Gun Kelly

Why did you choose this particular video?

I am not a a fan of Machine Gun Kelly’s Rap eras but I came across this video and found the editing really interesting so wanted to talk about it.

So, what is the narrative?

Machine Gun Kelly explores a relationship’s bitter end. The rapper also marked Valentine’s Day by launching another unsentimental project: his 1-800-The-Break-Up website, which allows users to text custom relationship-ending messages or pre-set, greeting card-styled disses.

Favourite parts of the video?

The use of ‘split screen’ is used very creatively throughout to connote the ideology of a break up. It is used in many different ways, especially at the beginning when you see that the breakup phone call is happening. It is used as transitions throughout and there are some very clever ways like handing over a letter to his ex and to show the relationship and his emotion about this particular woman are now broken.

As the song becomes more erratic, so does the video and this is done by making the editing and the graphics become more erratic. There are some really interesting moments when the effects are used to create broken imagery and it really stands out and creates a really interesting visual.

Finally the one thing that really stands out in this video is the vibrancy of the colour, as it sort of contradicts the topic of the song. The colours sort of make you really pay attention to the video and it has had over 51 million views and you can see why. Also even though it is a negative topic it puts a positive spin on it and I am sure all the colours have a very specific meaning.
