Welcome To Taste of States a place where we celebrate the weird and wonderful food of the United States of America. This can be everything from the snacks that are available for a limited time to the foods that are classic traditions at events such as Christmas and Thanksgiving! Each week we will explore the facts and the history surrounding a different food.
GRASSHOPPER FRIED PIE
Today we are heading to the Texas Crab Festival to take a look at a product that is this food huts best seller. It is a big hit at this festival and today we are going to take a look at it.
Bobs and Debs Fried Pies are a food truck that is from Austin Texas. They have a variation of options on offer. One of them that is incredibly popular is the Grasshopper Fried Pie.
An original Grasshopper pie is a no bake mousse pie that has a chocolate crumb and has a mint flavour to the mousse.
This particular recipe comes from the owners great grandmother. They mix cream cheese, sugar, creme de Menth flavour, chocolate cookie bits all mixed together. They then make dough out of flour, shortening, eggs, baking soda and sugar.
The pastry is put into a custom pie making machine to put the pastry in and then put in a scoop of a mixture into the middle, they then fold over and seal it.
Deep fry the tarts for four minutes in peanut oil. When they are cooked they are then covered in some chocolate drizzle.
There are lots of positive views of this snack as it is praised for the crispness of the pir crust and the way that it all works so well together.
