Welcome BACK to the Magic of The Music Video feature! We have been having a break from this but now it is back and this time it is on the new day of Saturday afternoons! Every month we will take a look at the music videos of certain artists and bands more in depth to explore just why I love them.
I am a Video Editor – and one of the things (probably the main thing) that inspired me to work in television post production was actually music videos.
Music videos are one of my favourite things in the world and I spent hours and I MEAN literally hours when I was growing up watching them Even now in the modern world, I can find myself getting lost on YouTube watching music videos for hours on end – they are an addiction.
This month we are delving into the world of Machine Gun Kelly (or MGK, whatever you prefer) and taking a look at some of the videos that I personally feel have some great editing techniques.
Bloody Valentine –MGK
Why did you choose this particular video?
This video is a really interesting one as it is a video where you see the chemistry between MGK and Megan Fox. It also has a lot of fantastic cinematography and it is a great video to start his career into the genre of pop punk rock. It has all the things you expect from this genre to make a good music video.
So, what is the narrative?
The video shows off Machine Gun Kelly’s edgy persona while Megan Fox takes full control of their fictional romance.
Favourite parts of the video?
This was Machine Gun Kelly’s first track that was in the style of the genre of pop punk, the editing really reflects this. Short edits, quick fast edits on the drum beat to highlight Travis Barker’s work and to give it pace. It creates excitement to the video and brings him straight into the genre.

The colour pink is used a lot in this video as a very clever meaning within it. Firstly it is used to create a sense of softness to MGKs persona and secondly to portray that Megan’s character is clearly the one in charge. The video uses his jumper as soft pink to amplify softness but whenever Megan does anything ‘dark’ the tone is bolder and darker.
The use of close ups are very cleverly placed throughout the video as it creates both the darkness and the seductive parts of the relationship. It is a simple edit technique and it works really well.
