Sunday Book Club: Death at the Seaside, Frances Brody

Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are looking at the next book in the Kate Shackleton series

Death at the Seaside (2016)

Frances Brody

Synopsis

AN IDYLLIC SEASIDE TOWN

Nothing ever happens in August, and tenacious sleuth Kate Shackleton deserves a break. Heading off for a long-overdue holiday to Whitby, she visits her school friend Alma who works as a fortune teller there.

A MISSING GIRL

Kate had been looking forward to a relaxing seaside sojourn, but upon arrival discovers that Alma’s daughter Felicity has disappeared, leaving her mother a note and the pawn ticket for their only asset: a watch-guard. What makes this more intriguing is the jeweller who advanced Felicity the thirty shillings is Jack Phillips, Alma’s current gentleman friend.

A COMPLEX MYSTERY TO SOLVE

Kate can’t help but become involved, and goes to the jeweller’s shop to get some answers. When she makes a horrifying discovery in the back room, it soon becomes clear that her services are needed. Met by a wall of silence by town officials, keen to maintain Whitby’s idyllic façade, it’s up to Kate to discover the truth behind Felicity’s disappearance.

Positive Points

Usually when you are eight books into a series it can be quite repetitive or boring however this book is unique and it is enjoyable. It is a fun read, is a new story and pushes the main themes along. It is a book that is escapism and an interesting concept.

Negative Points

Due to the fact that this book is part of a series you may feel you want to know more about the backstory.

Overall Review

This is a fun book to escape reality with – the crime is not hard-hitting but it creates a fun read. If you have not read the other books you may feel some of it is missing.
