Welcome to a feature where we sit down and talk to bands and artists about their latest albums to find out all about it. Today we speak to Slackrr about the album A Light on the Horizon.
Hello nice to meet you, tell us about yourself!
Hi, we’re SLACKRR and we’re a pop punk/emo band from Southampton, UK. In less than six years since we’ve been a band, we’ve played over 800 shows around the UK, Europe and the USA. We’ve released three full-length albums, with our latest released via Lost Music Collective Records (Vinnie Fiorello: Less Than Jake/Fuelled by Ramen Records), and recently signed with SBAM Records for the release of our next record.
We’ve been featured on the Sony Playstation 5 video game VR SKATER. We’ve played major festivals around the world and we’ve also had the honour of supporting awesome bands such as Hawthorne Heights, Punk Rock Factory, The Smoking Popes, The Dickies, Destroy Boys, Can’t Swim, and many more.
Tell us about the new album
“A Light on the Horizon,” will be our fourth full-length album, and came out in August, 2025 via SBAM Records. Recorded in ACO Studios with producer Adam Cox in between the band’s relentless touring schedule, “A Light on the Horizon” epitomises unreal, bone fide pop punk as described by BBC Radio One, with their high energy, emo-tinged and nostalgia-drenched anthems.
Named as one of the most exciting new bands to hit the UK, SLACKRR are undoubtedly at the forefront of the latest wave of pop punk. The new album features the singles that were adored by fans and critics alike, including “Over & Over,” “Save Your Breath,” – featured on Spotify’s curated playlist ‘Pop Punk’s Not Dead’ – “Never Forget,” and “Better Days,” BBC Introducing’s Track of the Week and earning the title of Kerrang! Radio’s Featured Artist of the Week. These stations, amongst many others including a plethora of BBC radio stations, multiple Kerrang! Radio shows, TotalRock Radio, Primordial Radio, Reckless Press, and Idobi Radio [USA] to name just a few, praised the singles as huge summer anthems that bring hope, positivity and endless amounts of energy.
Favourite track in new album and why?
I think we all have different favourites from this album, for different reasons, Scotty, who’s the main songwriter, has said “Better Days” is one of his favourites because it’s got fun, catchy riffs and melodies but a strong message of hope for the future and overcoming life’s adversities. Louis’ is “You Got Me,” and we’re going to be releasing a brand new music video for this track alongside the album.
“Over & Over” was my favourite track from the start of the recording process. It was the first single we released from the album and through SBAM, and it really felt like the start of this new chapter for us, full of energy and drive.
Tell us a bit about the recording process, was it fun to do?
The writing and recording was done during our manic touring schedule day’s off so everything felt very “of the moment” and if a song felt very honest, very us like as a band and basically had all 3 of us rocking out it went on the album the ones that felt like the needed work to become a song aren’t on this but they could appear on future releases who knows, with the amount that Scotty writes it’s always very exciting on that front.
I think what made this record so much fun was the sum of the parts. We were working with a new producer, a new super supportive label and a new approach that comes with those things. Also running in and out of the studio between shows is an absolutely crazy and exciting way to make a record.
What inspired the album name?
We’ve taken our previous album titles from a particular lyric in one of the songs or a title track, and these always came together quite naturally. With this record, we wanted something different and we wanted the title to encompass the message we were trying to put out there with this record, which is one of hope that things can always get better. It had many different names before we decided on “A Light on the Horizon,” because it felt like the perfect description of what this album is about for us: having the strength to get through tough experiences because there are happier times ahead.
Tell us the idea behind the album cover?
Once we’d decided on the title, we were trying to think of different ways we could portray it. Having a big, colourful sunrise felt really fitting not just because of the title but because we wanted the artwork to be bright and eye-catching. The waves that surround the person on the boat are big and turbulent, showing that he has been going through a difficult journey to reach the calm shores ahead. We were really trying to capture what the record was about in that through adversities and dark times there literally is light on the horizon.
What one of your songs on the new album do you think will be the most difficult to rehearse for a live audience?
All 3 of us have had different songs that we’ve had little bits to iron out. It’s mostly for us making sure it’s a live representation of the songs and not a carbon copy of what’s on the record so it has honesty in every performance. We all know that we’ll keep tweaking things for live so our fans get a unique show each time they see us.
For Scotty “Better Days” was one he really wanted to convey the real message of the song live and almost make sure it hits even harder than on record. For me Over & Over took more working out for me as I’m swapping between main vocal lines and harmonies in quick succession so getting that how we wanted to it took some time.
For Louis it was “You Got Me” as he just wanted it to have the right delivery live but saying that we spend a lot of time and care getting our live set as tight and strong as possible, mainly because with a couple of albums behind us now we want the new songs to sound as though we’ve played them as much as the existing set the inevitably have a sense of new material enthusiasm added but that can’t really be helped as all bands and artists love to show new work to their audiences.
Why should people listen to the album?
For anybody who’s never heard of us or never listened to our music, we feel like this is our strongest release yet. This album is where we’d like you to start, because these songs sound exactly like where we are right now. If you have listened to us before, whether you’ve only just discovered us or you’ve been with us from the start, this album also feels like a bit of a message of love to everybody who’s stuck by us and supported us throughout our journey as a band.
We can’t thank all of you guys enough for all of your endless love and support and for allowing us to do all of these crazy things we’ve been able to do. We have dedicated this record to many people who have helped us along the way, but most importantly we’ve dedicated it to you.
