The Travel Book – Travel Through A Photo – Maho Beach, St. Maartin

There is always a story behind a photograph and I thought it would be a fun way to look at the world of travel. So, welcome to the feature that will appear regularly in the travel section.

I love travelling and I adore when you come across somewhere in the world that is so unique by accident. Our tour guide told us the information about it but years later it has ended up becoming a viral sensation on social media.

In 2013, I went on a cruise to the Caribbean and one of the stops was St. Marrtin. Due to the fact that we only had a day we felt a day trip on a rib boat to see as much as the island as possible was the best way to see it.

It was only when we were on the boat that we got told that the island was one to one of the most dangerous airports and beaches in the world. The airplanes land right near Maho Beach meaning that they can kill people. Seriously. There are actually decapitation warnings on the beach warning people not to stand in certain areas – if you look online you can see how close they actually can get.

This photo was taken in the sea so we could experience the low flying planes. It was such a weird experience because even though we were far out at sea we were still really close to the planes.

This photo was taken to show just how close the planes get to the beach. Whilst this photo create a lot of good memories for me, I also really like this photograph.

I feel that due to it being a really hot day, the sea is glistening and the sky looks really blue which highlights the plane and the drama even more so. The fact that the plane is really near the beach doesn’t look real and creates a sense of surrealism to the photo.
