Most comedians decide to start the show with a voice over at the top that welcomes the comedian to the stage – most of these are pre recorded and the same every night – not Alfie, this is instead said live with a few jokes that are completely unexpected by the audience and end with big laughs. This is the thing with Alfie, you are expecting a joke to go one way and then it goes somewhere you don’t expect and it makes you want to laugh out loud mainly for the surprise of the punchline but also because of the delivery.
The main themes of the show are about how life has altered since his mum passed away and trying to find a member of the family that can replace her role within it. Let’s be clear – this topic may sound depressing but the actual show is a laugh a minute. There are many topics covered including art, Gladiator, old school experiences, dad dating and much more.
There are parts of the stand up routine that can relate to everyone that is dealt with in fun ways such as the topic of loneliness and feeling it in a big city such as London. Also it has a few jokes in there that are relevant to modern day society which I feel will be a common theme amongst stand ups this year, the good thing about Alfie is that he doesn’t make it political, instead focusses on it in an alternative and more relevant to his life sort of way. There are also some topics that you probably won’t expect that have some funny outcomes such as sperm banks, the ‘nerd’ and drugs.
The audience respond really well to Alfie’s stand up routine and there are constant laughs throughout, he reels the audience in to a safe space where they feel happy to interact with the comic and participate where is needed. Now don’t get my wrong it is not a show with a lot of audience interaction but where it is the audience respond well. If you are looking for a light hearted show then this may be the show for you.
