How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
I put the show on once before with the work-in-progress title of Jonty O’Callaghan: One-Man Sketch Show, which – y’know – did the job fine actually. It was simple. Straight to the point. Less of a mouthful. Some would say better. Why change it Jonty (you idiot)? But change it I did, because I wanted the title to allude to the one and only recurring sketch character of the show, which this title does rather well…
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
Well, like it says on the tin – it is a one-man sketch show! A pretty bonkers collection of character sketches that I’ve come up with which place the audience right in the sketch with me. That’s right. Audience participation. It’s only me up there so I need all the help I can bloody get. But don’t let that put you off – the aim is to give you a really good time, make you laugh and make you feel involved and part of the joke.
So even if the sound of audience participation makes you shrivel up into a ball, I’m hoping this show will make you unshrivel and have a good giggle, instead.
What other acts are you looking to seeing at the fringe?
I am coming to the fringe with such an interest to see as much as possible, so it feels unfair to single anyone out! I am heading up with just me and my helpful and talented techie Mark, all by ourselves, so it’s in my interest to see as much as I can and get to know as many people as I can so I don’t fall into a pit of lonely despair. I can’t do that. It wouldn’t be fair on Mark to do that. Not again.
How are rehearsals going?
Have you ever tried rehearsing on your own with no director and only the voices in your head for company? It’s a f****** riot.
(No, in all seriousness – I have really enjoyed it, It’s such a silly show – and I love how much fun that lets me have. I just need human company again. That’d be nice.)
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
You tell me, I haven’t done it yet. I’m excited though, I think it’s going to be so much fun and I’m looking forward to being in and amongst other performers and getting the chance to share what I’ve worked on.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Keep an eye out for scratch nights/open mics and those kinds of opportunities that let you perform for free! It’s so invaluable for developing your work to be able to try stuff out in those kinds of spaces. There are often call outs for them on social media – so follow emerging companies and look out for those opportunities to apply. Selling a kidney is also good – or marrying rich. Get yourself in that will.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Rowan Atkinson, probably. Is that basic for a comedian to say? I don’t care, he’s my comedy hero. Him or any of the Pythons still alive.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Susan. I think the reasons speak for themselves,
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
My show’s main profile is on instagram – @onemanjonty
Give me a follow for all the info and updates!
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Because. It’s. Funny.
