How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
This is a show about coming to the end of my comedy career. Killing off Bibby. As usual it is inspired by a movie (Back to the Future) and is full of silly jokes. The title manages to encapsulate all three of these elements.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
My shows have a structure, based around a movie plot, and are intertwined with stories about my life. But I guess that’s for me. For the audience the style is chaotic and unpredictable.
The audience are a massive part. They supply sound effects, deliver classic movie lines, and key moments—each performance totally unique.
But the main thing is that it is all friendly. I will never force people to do anything that I wouldn’t do myself or make jokes to humiliate them. We work together and create something funny and fresh each night.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Sadly, I am only just sneaking into Camden Fringe at the end of July before heading up to Edinburgh the following day. So, I won’t get to see much. I would love to see Low Effort Sketches. Also, Kathryn Haywood is hilarious and has a new show called ‘Magic & Sex’. That will be a banger!
How are rehearsals going?
I actually don’t rehearse that much. I write then I do work-in-progress shows. I just had my first WIP at Brighton Fringe and loved it! I’ve got a lot of work to do but it felt great to hear the laughter and get that live feedback. Now all I need to do is completely rewrite the entire show before doing it again. This will be fine.
One thing I can tell you is that this show has the most amazing soundtrack. Movie tunes from Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, Shawshank, Star Wars and loads more. Worth it for the Spotify playlist alone.
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
This is my first time at Camden Fringe! So I’m hoping the best thing is audience members laying gifts at the front of the stage. I’m thinking nice smelly candles, a bottle of sauvy B and maybes a battered sausage?
I think the best part will be the familiar faces. I have a little cult following now and doing a London show means I can test it out on really understanding/ forgiving/ up-for-it audience members.
London can be an expensive place to perform in – what key advice would you give to performers that is a sort of life hack?
Charge them more! They can afford it. They pay like 5 quid for a croissant there.
But I think see it as an investment in your future. Nearly all my acting work, including some very well-paid adverts, comes from putting myself out there as a comedian. Keep to your budget but know that putting out your talent will earn you the financial returns further down the line.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
For this show it would have to be Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, the writers of Back to the Future. Maybe they would sue me for copywrite infringements but hopefully they would see how the idea they had over 40 years ago continues to inspire people to write and create art.
Throw in Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd and we got a heck of a show!
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Smidgen the Pigeon? He looks like a Garage MC. Maybe MC Woody. Great a-coo sticks! HAHAHA! Is this thing on…!?
