Hello! Tell us about yourself?

Hi! Let’s see, I’m a writer/performer from New York City. I started out as an actress and did regional theater. Got mixed up with a Russian avant-garde theater Director who changed my life. She taught me to go deeper into my creativity and develop a “psycho-phsycial” approach. After a few years, I didn’t want to take direction anymore…so I fronted a rock band. Then toured a punk cabaret show!

Lived out my rock n roll dreams. I also dated a lot. I was a serial dater and “faller in love-er”. But, I had moments where I hated myself. Then I got mixed up in Buddhism. All those Buddhists insisted I look within and not without. It was transformational!

So I went deeper into art and writing. Maybe writing is saving my soul! Along with my animals. I fantasize about getting super rich and buying vast quantities of land to save as many wayward animals as I can!

Tell us all about your show!

First a confession: Lolo was the nickname my best friend gave me. And the character is loosely based on me. She has some of my flaws and personality traits. But she’s also taken on a life of her own. She’s revealed her unique history, preferences, and desires. She embraces life and shows her little raw heart to the world in the most vulnerable way.

Lolo’s Boyfriend Show is Lolo’s journey to face herself – and her boyfriends – when her life falls apart. It’s a solo show where I play about eighteen characters, do multiple costume changes right on stage, throw down some old-school physical comedy, have a sex scene with myself, square up with my self-hate (I mean Lolo’s), and aim to have moments of pure honesty with the audience. You should come! (By the way… Lolo’s Boyfriend Show won the Audience Choice Award at the New York City Fringe Festival.)

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

I’m really excited to see Xhloe & Natasha! They seem so utterly wild, theatrical and eclectic.  I’m also keen to see The Marriage of Alice B Toklas by Gertrude Stein. I hear that four actors play over thirty characters!

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

This is my first time doing the Edinburgh Fringe. I’ve done the New York City Fringe Festival, but that’s a very different animal. The advice I’ve been given is to be as prepared as possible, make as many friends as possible, and to pace myself once I get there!

If this is your first time – what are you looking forward to?

I’m really looking forward to the synchronicities and surprises that are made possible by a festival of that size. I’m looking forward to sharing Lolo’s Boyfriend Show with as many people as possible. And I’m looking forward to letting this Festival change my life in the most positive and profound way.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

I love breakfast, so I imagine I’ll get up early for breakfast. Do some yoga and chanting to prepare for the day. Then put on a cute outfit and venture out to do flyering and see shows. I’ll head back to my room to take breath and prepare before doing Lolo’s Boyfriend Show at theSpaceUK at 20:30 August 1-16 (not 10).

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Getting to share Lolo with an international audience!

What is the hardest part about performing at the Fringe?

Bringing Lolo all the way from New York to an international audience. Lolo has a lot of stuff: a ton of clothes, a giant clothing rack, a velvet chair, guitars…! How am I gonna get everything there?!

Do you bring anything special from home to make it feel more special whilst you are away?

That’s a sweet question. I practice Buddhist chanting, so I’m going to bring a travel scroll to chant to. Hopefully it will keep me grounded throughout the magic of the festival!

What are your best hacks to save money whilst at the Fringe?

I need some money-saving hacks! Do you know any?

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

Hmm… top three items to bring to the Fringe:

  • An open heart to enjoy unique performances and make new friends.
  • Your Roledex (or the “Contacts” ap on your phone) to keep track of all your new friends!
  • A video camera (or your phone) to capture the magic of your experiences

what’s the secret to successful flyering?

I’ve heard the secret is heart-to-heart dialogue with one individual at a time. It’s not about just handing out as many flyers as you can, but forming real connections with people.

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Funnest night ever!
