Taste Of States – This Week – Gator Kebabs

Welcome To Taste of States a place where we celebrate the weird and wonderful food of the United States of America. This can be everything from the snacks that are available for a limited time to the foods that are classic traditions at events such as Christmas and Thanksgiving! Each week we will explore the facts and the history surrounding a different food.

GATOR KEBABS

Today we are heading to the Florida State Fair to take a look at a feast that will appeal to some and maybe not others.

Chester’s Gator and Tators is a food stall that specialises in ‘fun, exotic traditional fair foods’. Whilst the Carnival Eats show I watched was in Florida – they tour across the country at other State Fairs. They have a variety of products on offer but one thing they do is Gator Kebabs.

The batter has secret ingredients in it so I cannot go into depth as to what is in it’s flavour. They cut up bits of gator and put the chunks into the batter. The gator meat that they use is the tail. They put six or seven pieces on a stick, cover in the batter and then cornmeal. They are then deep fried for six to seven minutes. They are served with homemade ranch and potato chips.

There are a lot of positive reviews online about this kebab – have you tried it?
