Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
My new single, “Long Way Back,” is about staying in the wrong relationship for too long. It’s not all bitterness, though. There’s a reason you got on the metaphorical train in the first place. So the song has accountability, a sense of humor, and some hope.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
My favorite lyric in “Long Way Back” is “oh how we clung to the booze and the moonlight, hoping a fool’s hope could ever survive...” For me, it’s the most autobiographical line. Some people can have a beautiful relationship on the weekends and be completely compatible in a party scene or when you’re having fun. But life isn’t just the weekends.
Most days of your life will be bland and stressful, Tuesdays with a lot of life coming at you. And you have to be good at both.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
“Apocalypse” is my favorite song from my album, Shadow Work. I think it’s the most uniquely me song, and it doesn’t sound like anything else I’ve heard before. I’m not quite sure many people contemplate that topic as much as I do. The pedal steel in the song is also pretty sick.
Your favourite song to play live:
At this point, probably “Alive!” — I get to take off the singer-songwriter hat and just get to be the emo frontman I was as a kid. Lots of Adam Lazzara-inspired mic spins 😉
The song that was the longest to write and why?
“Jim Carrey,” no doubt. It was a really obscure premise for a song that was extremely personal to me, but I had to make sure it was graspable for other people. It took me about 6 months, on and off, trying to figure out what was true, what sang well, and how other people could relate to it.
Your most emotional track:
I would probably say “Family Tradition.” I had to address my least favorite part of myself in that song, and also dive into my worst fear, which is inadequacy. Pursuing this career, you can often feel yourself falling behind the normal course of life. And once you go far enough, you only have one option, which is to see it through. I’m too far in at this point.
Dream collaboration:
Ruston Kelly or Bre Kennedy. They’re two of my favorite artists who continuously produce music and have built platforms that I really respect and find inspiring.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
“Please. Oh, Dear God. Don’t let the tracks or in ears f*** up.” If that goes well, it’s just good fun!
The hardest track to play live:
“Alive!” There just isn’t a single breath in those 4 minutes, so gasping for air in the middle of the song has just become part of performing it live!
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
I always bring some Tolkien. Lord of the Rings is, as the kids would say, my “roman empire.” I can turn my brain off for a while with that so it’s very nice to have on hand.
Describe your fans in three words:
Great Sense of Humor. Sorry, that’s 4 words. But I believe you have to have a great sense of humor to pay to hear my music or to see me play live!
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
“These Days” by Jackson Browne. I wrote an entire album trying to say what he said in 3 verses and he wrote that song when he was 17.
What we can look forward to from you this year:
Tons of new music! I’ve got at least 7 singles and an EP ready to go… maybe even another EP after that too…
