All this month we are speaking to the musician Jon Chesbro. The musician is from Maine and is both a songwriter, producer and a multi-instrumentalist. Last year he released the EP Outta State Outta Mind and is set to release new music soon but has recently released the new track Choices. This week we get to know a bit more about Jon.

Hello Jon lovely to meet you all ! How did you get into music?
I got into music when I was 13 years old. My mother bought me a guitar because she saw that I needed a hobby [laughs]. Also I was exposed to music from the church growing up. We went to a church in Salem, Massachusetts and they always had an amazing choir and pianist. Tall ceilings and choir reverb is my childhood. This song kind of reflects that in a way.
What is your favourite thing about the music industry?
That’s a hard one. I feel like the current state of the music industry isn’t great and it’s hard to find the light sometimes. I suppose the overall accessibility of music to new listeners is always a great thing. It’s never about the money or the fame – it’s more so about getting your songs out to the people. Everything else is extra to me.
Tell us about your music – what sort of genre of music do you perform?
I love indie music. If I were to wrap things up in one genre, I guess it would be indie, acoustic rock. I do play with synthwave music and instrumental tunes but at heart I am a singer songwriter. Some things just need to be said with lyrics.
You are also from Maine – what is the music scene like there?
Surprisingly very diverse. I thought there wouldn’t be much out here but it’s amazing to see all different types of artists. Blues, rock, funk, punk and everything else. You just gotta go to the right venue to find what you’re looking for [laughs].
Who is your favourite musician?
My favourite musician right now and has been for a long time is Jim James. He’s very influential to me. He always branches out in different styles and has an immense creative discography. I love whatever he puts out.
