INTERVIEW -A Quick Conversation with: Last Hyena

Welcome the feature where we ask musicians or bands five really tough questions about music! Today I speak to Last Hyena who have a lot of new music on the way…

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

I’d have to go with “Terra” from our album “How Soon Is Mars” for this one. It’s something we wrote very early on as Last Hyena and will always be one of my favourites.

Your favourite song to play live:

Our (also upcoming) single “Surfer” has great energy throughout and always gets the crowd going, especially with the elongated sing along section to close out the song!

The song that was the longest to write and why?

Although we had the bare bones down quickly, “Make It Sound French” probably took the longest to complete overall. It had many iterations in its early weeks/months, with entire 1-2 minute sections being rewritten and replaced – until we landed on the version you’ll hear on the record.

Your most emotional track:

For me, I think it has to be “Where’s Laika?” from the last album. The closing section in particular, leaving listeners with a triumphant yet solemn crescendo.

Dream collaboration:

If we’re talking DREAM collaboration, it’s gotta be between The Mars Volta, Mogwai or QOTSA.

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

The entire day leading up to the show we all usually feel pretty chill, it’s only the 20-30 seconds before walking out when the adrenaline hits and the heart starts pumping – but that’s one of the best feelings in the world.

The hardest track to play live:

In terms of technicality, probably “Doctorpus” from the last album. Although, we’ve been playing it for so long, in a way it’s also the easiest!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Running shoes, AirPods, Sunglasses & earplugs (for playing and sleeping).

Describe your fans in three words:

Loyal, crazy & heroic.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

I’m listening to a lot of SeeYouSpaceCowboy at the moment, so anything from their latest album – let’s go with “Red Wine & Discontent”.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

More releases, more shows, more Last Hyena!
