Every day this month we are taking a look at a variation of couples from different television shows. It is the month of ‘love’ so it in tradition we are looking at the world of relationships. There will be spoilers throughout so be warned!

Day 26 – John and Mary,

Sherlock

Sherlock Holmes is a book I would say is one of my favourites but I didn’t really read them until after I had seen Sherlock. In 2014 I only started watching Sherlock because I had a really long commute and it helped make it a lot shorter.

When they introduced a woman for John Watson I wasn’t sure how it was going to change the dynamics of the show but it actually made it great. The relationship between Mary and Sherlock made it fun and her love for John Watson made it true and a great story.

The fact that Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington were married at the time probably helped with the chemistry and helped bring John and Mary to Life.

In the books Mary is hardly in it so the way that they created this character had a huge twist which was fantastic. She can read John really well and she knows how to manipulate him as well such as him becoming friends with Sherlock again.

Mary in this version is sort of like a female style of Sherlock which plays on the questions about the relationship between Watson and Holmes which is evident in the book as well.
