Tell us about:
Your latest stand up show you are taking to Leicester Comedy Festival:
The show is called I Know a Guy and its about what happens when a medical misdiagnosis results in a kidnapping and an Irish family secret is revealed way too late.
It’s a true story about a family secret about me that was revealed and things then suddenly started to make sense, especially around things I did in the past!
My Mothers mysterious illness meant we were not allowed to have any contact for a while. When I did ‘move in’ (my mothers’ words) it was not the smoothest transition with the people who initially looked after me not willing to give me back. How else to solve this problem than have me kidnapped! All before the mystery illness was revealed. Spoiler: everyone is fine!
It’s a light-hearted, layered and crafted look at a family secret that, when revealed, made me think very differently about my own life and made me reconsider many of my previous decisions. It’s funny and a pretty interesting and bizarre story – it’s personal and observational and I’m really enjoying performing it.
Your favourite joke you have created:
I’ve a twitter/ X joke that I really like. It’s not about Twitter/ X really – it’s a wordplay that was satisfying to work out.
Your favourite venue to perform at:
I perform mainly in the Netherlands as that’s where I live currently, and there are some great English language venues there. But in the UK I loved performing at The stand in Edinburgh.
The joke that was the longest to write and why?
I’m still working on it… been 4 years now… getting there…
Comedy hero:
Tommy Tiernan – I’ve always loved him. I wrote my first stand up set about offering to buy him a pint after seeing him perform. He politely declined (obviously), I was mortified, as not only was I rejected by my hero, but I also realised I was holding a bag of curry chips at the time- the shame nearly killed me!
Dream venue to play at:
My own club somewhere in the Netherlands!
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
Relief that my nerves have calmed.I’m always nervous before the show – but that mostly dissipates once I get on stage.
The hardest joke to perform and why:
I have a misdirect joke about Descartes and it depends on me to deliver it in a very exact way for it to land properly – if I mess up then it doesn’t work. I like it as when it lands the pay off is great – but unlike most of what I do, there is no space to improvise/ or mess up the rhythm at all.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Charging bank – I have zero sense of direction, I get lost on my way home sometimes and I’ve lived there for years, everything kinda looks the same to me So having a charging bank to power on my old phone to use google maps is pretty essential if I’m to do anything other than wander around in a circle and not even notice!
Describe your fans in three words:
Sociable, quirky and lovely (obviously)
What we can look forward to from you this year:
I’m planning on touring ‘I Know a Guy’ this year in the Netherlands and to some surrounding countries. I love festivals so I’m very excited to go to LCF and other UK festivals including Hastings Comedy Festival, Brighton Fringe and back to Edinburgh Fringe.
