All this month we are celebrating acts that you need to look out for in 2025. Today it is the time to speak to comedian Stuart Laws who is heading out on tour from March
Hello tell us all about yourself?
Who’s asking? Oh, The Phoenix Remix, great, well, I’m Stuart Laws and I have recently retired from football, due to my team folding. I’d played for them since I was 17. Hit the post on my debut and scored only 1 competitive goal in all that time. Partly because 90% of my appearances were in goal.
How was 2024 for you?
It was hectic: a tour, a special, a new show, directed a bunch of specials, a live show and made loads of comedy. But more importantly: saw a big-ass millipede and it’s dominating my brainwaves.
What was the top 3 highlights for you?
Filming my special in June – it’s a show I love and it was the last performance of it and I had such an incredible team from 800 Pound Gorilla and Turtle Canyon Comedy working on it. Then directing Sindhu Vee and James Acaster’s specials felt really, really great and I think they are two of the best comedians around at the moment/all time? Is that too bold? No, I think it’s correct. Then I also scored a goal in the Taskmaster football game in May, absurd to play football in front of 4000 people like that.
What was the key lesson you learnt from last year?
When you score a goal, don’t mentally switch off, because you will then immediately concede a goal as well.
What are your plans for 2025?
New tour! New special! New directing work! Do comedy in the USA!
What other shows are you looking forward to watching this year?
Nish Kumar’s tour show is so incredible, Ed Gamble’s is just massive laugh after massive laugh but then the new shows? Lou Sanders is back, delighted about that, Rhiannon Shaw is working on a new show and she’s brilliant, as well as Ian Smith and Sikisa. Also, Kat Sadler’s Such Brave Girls series 2 will be brilliant.
What styles do you hope to see more of in comedy this year?
People cowering at the back of the stage, against the curtain, barely speaking above a whisper. Also, I do genuinely want more comedians to employ music gig rules and hold the mic out to audience members to complete punchlines and have a cable-basher behind them adjusting the cable as the comedian takes an iconic joke out into the crowd.
What comedian is your ones to watch in 2025 and why?
Ruby Carr, Daman Bamrah, Chloe Radcliffe and Tommy “Fraud King” Michaels. They all need to be kept a close eye on, for different reasons.
Do you have any new years resolutions? If so what are they?
To answer Q&A questions less flippantly.
Are you on social media? If so how can people find out more about your troupe?
Stuartlawscomedy on everything, including onlyfans, that’s legit. I’m on onlyfans and I put out comedy content, behind the scenes stuff and exclusive recordings and shows. It’s great.
Three words why people should come and see you this year?
Cheaper Than Others
