Ones To Watch 2025 – INTERVIEW – Nate Perry & Ragged Company pt.1

All this month we are celebrating acts that you need to look out for in 2025. Leading the interviews is Boston based band Nate Perry & Ragged Company. Every Wednesday morning we will be speaking to the band to find out all about them and what they have in store for this year. Today we are going to delve into the world of the music industry.

Hello Nate Perry and Ragged Company lovely to meet you all ! How did you get into music?

I was a pretty quiet kid growing up and didn’t play a lot of sports. I remember wanting to have a hobby very early on and seeing guitar as that outlet. I was driving with my dad in his truck and he put on a Springsteen record, The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle and that was it. I knew I wanted to make music.

What is your favourite thing about the music industry?

The payoff when our music finds a new fan. Seeing all the hard work of writing, producing, rehearsing, and performing resonating with someone. It all comes together when you get to see how excited someone gets when they hear us, especially live. It’s an incredible feeling.

Tell us about your band – what sort of genre of music do you perform?

At our core, we’re a rock n’ roll band, but our sound pulls from all kinds of influences. I write the songs, and the band brings them to life with touches of blues, country, and alt-rock vibes mixed in.

Nate, you left the army in 2018 what was skills that you could take from your experience and utilise it into music?

In the Army, I learned how to talk to a room. There’s a lot of downtime so I’d make jokes and tell stories when me and the guys had nothing to do. It really showed me that even with so many different personalities, we are all more similar than we are different and that everyone loves a good story. Early on in training, much of the Army experience is about learning confidence, and that really taught me about presence and encouraged me to tell my own story after the military.

You are also from Boston. What is the music scene like there?

The music scene here is incredible, there’s so much going on. It’s full of hard rock, metal, and chill indie, plus a surprising amount of country, which I love. There’s a strong hip-hop and rap presence too. We’ve found that not many Boston bands sound like us, though, and I think that really helps us stand out in a good way.

You released your debut EP The Other side of Everything last year what was the reaction to it?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. I think we surprised a lot of people with the honest songwriting and production quality, which we’re really proud of. People really seemed to connect with the stories we were telling and the music. We also got some great press, both here and internationally, and one of our tunes even blew up in Brazil for a while.
