Sunday Book Club: Ayoade On Top, Richard Ayoade

Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are going up to the skies for an in depth analysis…

Ayoade On Top
(2019)

Richard Ayoade

Synopsis

A message from the Captain:

‘On behalf of myself and the entire Ayoade team, welcome to Ayoade on Top. At last, the definitive book about perhaps the best cabin-crew dramedy ever filmed: View from the Top, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.’

Buckle up for the flight of your life.

– from Waterstones

Positive Points

This book is incredibly niche and is focussed on a topic that is incredibly random. It is all about the film View From The Top and knowing that Ayoade is film obsessed, it makes sense that he would geek out on such a unique film. It is a really funny book as he picks up on the ridiculous section’s of the film and goes really in depth to the cinematography based around the film whilst also filtering in his own personal life experiences. It is a really interesting read and it is amusing to see just how in depth he actually goes.

Negative Points

To understand any of the book you have to watch the film – trust me I know because I originally tried to read it without the knowledge and it made no sense. It can be a lot of commitment to read a book especially when the film is poor.

Overall Review

As a book, I found it a really interesting and enjoyable read, once I had made the effort to actually watch the film (it was on my Kindle for 4 years before I made the effort to watch the film). If you can get past watching the film it is a really in depth analysis of it and it is really good fun.
