Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
My new single is “Sleeptalking.” It’s a song about struggling in a relationship or situation where you feel like everything should be perfect but it just isn’t. Sometimes you wish you could be anywhere else simply because you don’t want to hurt someone by telling them how you really feel. You end up just pushing all your emotions down and hoping they’ll get the message somehow, which of course they never do.
Your favourite lyric in this song:
“You’re the stranger in my bed tonight”
Your favourite song that you have created:
Honestly, I really love “Sleeptalking.” It’s a song that I’m really proud of. It’s one of the more vulnerable songs I’ve written and I think it really sets the tone for what’s to come!
Your favourite song to play live:
I love performing “Deadweight” because it’s so not serious and I’m a goof at heart! I love to mess around on stage and have a little dance break in this song. It’s also easy for people to pick up the lyrics in the chorus, even if they haven’t heard it before, so it’s a fun one for everyone to sing along to!
The song that was the longest to write and why?
“Can’t pretend” from my recent EP, Girl of Your Dreams, definitely took us a while. We had a lot of verse options and could only pick 2. I think because we went crazy with the imagery in the lyrics, we needed to narrow down which ones were best for the song. For context if you haven’t heard it, I’m literally referencing both Jack and Jill and getting struck by lightning in the same verse, so you can imagine we were in a state while writing it!
Your most emotional track:
“Heavy Little Things” was one of the first songs I wrote with my boyfriend and collaborator, Cade Hoppe. It was also one of the first times I’d opened up on a song about my mental health struggles. It was an emotional song to create but it also felt extremely liberating to get it all out. Now I can’t stop writing about my depression and anxiety!
Dream collaboration:
Lana Del Rey! I wouldn’t feel worthy but I would be so grateful to even just be in the same room with her and see how she works. I’m manifesting that it’ll happen!
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
It’s cheesy but I mostly feel really grateful. As a smaller artist, it’s a lot of playing for friends and friends of friends and really loyal listeners who are so sweet and supportive. As I play for more and more people, I never want it to be lost on me how cool it is to connect with people in that way!
The hardest track to play live:
“SIDE FX” is quite a hard one to play live. It’s pretty high in my range and also very upbeat, so I have to exercise a lot of breath control for it. When I first performed it live, I was so nervous about it. I wanted to hit all the notes perfectly and rock out, but I chose to just focus on the notes! I really want to be able to perform this song and do it justice. It’s what motivates me to do more cardio, I’m so serious!
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
Water, blotting papers (I have sweaty upper lip issues, not ashamed to admit it) and my mom. Always my mom. She has come to every show and will continue to come to as many shows as she possibly can. I love her so much. I know she isn’t an “item” but she’s an essential!
Describe your fans in three words:
Funny, energetic, and sensitive.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
“Say It Right” by Nelly Furtado. Always and forever!
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
More music, fun music videos, good times, and hopefully some more live shows!
