Tell us about:
Your latest stand up show:
It’s called The Spark. It’s a show about how to keep the spark alive in a marriage, but also in yourself. How profound does that sound?! You can tell he’s been on Radio 4, can’t you?
Your favourite joke you have created:
My favourite joke I’ve written for someone else was on Radio 4’s The News Quiz, where I suggested that Miles Jupp was doing drugs off a topless Danny Finkelstein. The joke ended with Miles giggling, saying: “WHAT an Armistice Day that was.”
Your favourite venue to perform at:
I love the Glee Club in Cardiff. I used to work behind the bar there for years before I did stand-up, so it’s a home away from home.
The joke that was the longest to write and why?
There is a chunk in this show which has taken a while to tweak: it’s about not drinking alcohol anymore, and it took a while mainly to make sure that it was funny enough to remain in the show. I like to talk about important things, but if it’s not funny, I can’t justify it being in the show. People have come for a laugh!
Comedy hero:
Russell Howard. He was the first comic I ever bought a ticket to see. I supported him on one of his work-in-progress gigs in Clapham just after lockdown, and it meant a huge deal to me. He was a real sweetheart.
Dream venue to play at:
The Hammersmith Apollo in London. I’ve seen a lot of comedy there, and I think it’s prestige within the UK means it would be a proper box-tick moment for me to do it. One day.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
My heartbeat increases a bit, but it depends on the gig. I think there’s an anticipation that anything could happen. I like to make my shows quite interactive and ensure that no one show is the same – I couldn’t just do a monologue each night, it would drive me mad.
The hardest joke to perform and why:
I used to have a joke where I did a (pitch-perfect) impression of Delia Smith screaming ‘WHERE ARE YOU?’ – that was hard to do when I had a bad throat.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
My notebook. Even if I know the show back-to-front, I’ll write it down about three times before I go on stage. Plus I like to add little topical bits and newer things in as the tour progresses, so the notebook is pretty vital.
Describe your fans in three words:
Gorgeous, wealthy, sexy.
What we can look forward to from you this year:
I’ve got a new pair of glasses. They look very similar to my old pair, because it’s important to keep the brand going. But also: I’m the happiest I’ve ever been, the healthiest I’ve ever been, and I’m so excited to tour this show.
