Sunday Book Club: Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded, Simon Winchester

Every Sunday we are taking a look at the world of books. I read a lot and always want to share my opinions on what I read, so I thought it would be fun to write reviews. Today we are looking at a book that talks about a historic event.

Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded (2003)

Simon Winchester

Synopsis

Simon Winchester’s brilliant chronicle of the destruction of the Indonesian island of Krakatoa in 1883 charts the birth of our modern world. He tells the story of the unrecognized genius who beat Darwin to the discovery of evolution; of Samuel Morse, his code and how rubber allowed the world to talk; of Alfred Wegener, the crack-pot German explorer and father of geology. In breathtaking detail he describes how one island and its inhabitants were blasted out of existence and how colonial society was turned upside-down in a cataclysm whose echoes are still felt to this day

– from Waterstones

Negative Points

This book was written in the early noughties so there are parts of the book that are out of date as it has erupted in that area a lot more recent. Also the book is incredibly long that it will ne a bit hard to keep pushing through at times.

Overall Review

This book gives you a really in depth look at this historical event – whilst it is really interesting it is a very long read that you may find hard at times.
