Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – Leah Mason

Tell us about

Your latest single you have released:

My recent single, “Midas Touch,” is probably my favorite song lyrically on the album. I came into the studio with a little 4 or 5 line poem and I knew it could be something, but I wanted it to be perfect. We spent hours getting everything just right and really took our time with it. I’m lucky that my co-writers were so on board with the idea and cared just as much as I did because the song wouldn’t be the same without them!

Your favourite lyric in this song:

I love the bridge lyrics in “Midas Touch”:

Guess you could say I have the Midas touch / my kiss is like some magic dust / I’ll send him to love from lust / guess you say I have the Midas touch

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

My favorite song is probably “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” which is actually my new single which will be out on June 28th. It’s the only real ballad on my album, Hexed, and definitely one of my most vulnerable songs. It’s honestly hard not to cry every time I listen to it. When we were making the song it came together so easily, it felt like it already existed somewhere in my head.

Your favourite song to play live:

I haven’t actually performed any of my new music live yet! I have an idea of what it would be like though and I think that “Klepto” would be a fun one to play live!

The song that was the longest to write and why?

“Midas Touch” definitely took me the longest to write. We went back and forth with it for a really long time, and the amount of unused/graveyard lyrics could write an entirely different song (maybe even 2 or 3 different songs)! I do think it was well worth the effort though as it’s now one of my favorite songs!

Your most emotional track:

“Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” hands down. This past year has been so hard for me and I’ve tried to suppress a lot of what I was feeling. It hit a point though where my body physically couldn’t hold in all of those emotions anymore and I had a full on breakdown. It was an extremely difficult time for me. I hope that someone who is struggling right now can feel less alone when they listen to this song.

Dream collaboration:

There are so many artists I’m inspired by, but as of right now my dream collaboration would be SZA. I think she’s such an insane talent and SOS is the perfect

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

It’s honestly been a while since I’ve played live since a lot of my focus has been on finishing up and rolling out my album. That feeling of walking on stage to do a show is unlike any other feeling in the world though. It’s such a sacred and special thing to connect with an audience like that. I love performing so much and I hope to be back playing live shows soon!

The hardest track to play live:

The hardest track from my new album to sing is definitely “Midas Touch.” The vocal range on that song is crazy. The chorus alone is tough! When we were recording it, it took me about 30 different takes to get it right!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

1. Eye mask. I need pitch black darkness to sleep.

2. Aquaphor. Dry skin is not cute!

3. AirPods. I need time where I can decompress by watching a show or podcast by myself.

Describe your fans in three words:

Funny, lyric-lovers, and loyal.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

Oh, there are so many! The one song that has always stuck with me though is “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” by John Mayer. The lyrics are just so good. It’s unreal.

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

My debut album, Hexed, was released July 26th. I’m so excited for it to be out. I’m even filming something special that will go along with it!
