There are some really unusual and unique shows at the fringe and sometimes the best thing to do is take a chance on a simple idea. Last year a show about cardboard (The Ice Hole) was my stand out show and even a year later I am still telling people about it. Well this year I have upgraded, my favourite show of this year does include cardboard but has upgraded to include toilet roll on it.
It is really hard to define what Luke Rollason show actually is but one thing I can guarantee it is hilarious.
As soon as the audience sit down they are absolutely howling with laughter. That is what I am going to define as the “Rollason effect”. The most amazing thing is that he hardly says anything for the first five minutes it is solely his eyes which he can expand to look owl like that really create the humour. When he wants an audience member to interact with something he has an element of childlike sounds that automatically get the audience involved.
We have to talk about the toilet roll. The set is solely built from these with these toilet paper mache clouds as well on coat hangers which creates a sense of surrealism and imagination. The ways that toilet rolls is used throughout the show is so creative and hilarious and the idea for the show has to be applauded for just how well the bizarre works.
Audience interaction is a huge part of the show which makes me applaud the improvisation of it. Luke creates an incredibly safe space that everyone wants to get involved. I even got asked to talk down the microphone as a desperate character wanting another story – it was super fun and allowed me to re-enter the world of improv myself for the first time properly since 2020.
The character work of Luke is impeccable he is sort of like play dough, he can mould his face and body into these fascinating characters that come alive and brings this unique world to life. The hour goes by in a flash.
I have seen no other show like this at the fringe this year, it is so unique and it is definitely one that I will be talking about to other people in a years time.
