How did you come up with the name of your show that your taking to the Camden fringe?
First thing I would say day in, day out when answering the phones was ‘How can I help?’. Sometimes, when the patients were extra rude, I really did not want to help. When writing the script, I thought the title needed to indicate that the show was about a customer facing job, but with a bit of sarcasm and a hint of fake smile.
Tell us a little bit about your style of show?
‘How Can(t) I Help?’ is a one woman show starring…the receptionist. A GP receptionist. The receptionist takes the audience through a day in the life, from the moment she wakes to when the phones finally turn off. She brings you into life at the surgery, introduces you to the patients (good and mostly bad) and teaches you how to ignore the 8am callers.
what advice would you give to others who want to perform at Camden Fringe next year?
Less is more! Less physical set to drag across London. Less flyers for people to throw in the bin after you’ve tried your hardest to convince them to come to your show. My other point goes without saying but support other shows! Everyone is in it together so where you can, support support support. A simple share on socials goes a long way.
What is the best thing about performing at the Camden fringe?
The sense of we’re all in it together! Fringe can feel overwhelming, so meeting other theatre companies and for me, especially one person shows, really helps.
What are your three favourite things about Camden?
The food, the pub theatres and the ‘£1 to take a photo with a punk’ man.
Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, ultimate one woman show crush.
The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?
Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Please come to my show Phoebe.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
I’m on Instagram @howcantihelpplay
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Everyone hates receptionists.
