Hello! Tell us about yourself?

My name is Will and I’m a stand-up comedian, debuting at the Fringe this year. I hope that my show is a huge success so that I can ultimately fulfil my lifelong goal, which is to while away my days appearing on celebrity teatime formats (think Pointless, Tipping Point, Antiques Roadshow). Some other things you should know is I was born and raised in London, which is in England, and I am a proud queer office temp. I have two Blue Peter badges. No, please don’t get up.

Tell us all about your show!

The show is about my lifelong obsession with watching TV. Telly gets a bad rep; people think it’s just a silly distraction from the challenges of the ‘real world’. Personally, I experience every one of life’s rich emotions during an episode of The Masked Singer – shock, joy, intense shame. No relationship has ever been as fulfilling as seeing a former Hollyoaks’ star ballroom hold improve week on week on Strictly. My show questions why on earth you would go out and “find yourself”, when you could just watch a woman called Claire cook a steak in the microwave on Come Dine With Me? For me, that’s what gives life meaning.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?

My favourite show is Strictly Come Dancing. And that show is about putting yourself out there, being who you want to be and dancing like nobody’s watching. Weirdly, I have never been asked to be on a Strictly, probably because I am a random man in his mid 20s who is not famous and life arguably lacks purpose. Hence the emphasis on nobody.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Bella Hull is so funny, and I can’t wait to see what her new show holds. I’ve shared previews with John Tothill, Zoe Brownstone, Sarah Roberts, all of whom are stunning. I always love watching Jo Griffin perform, she’s one of those comedians that makes you think: ‘I want to be friends with you!’. And now we are friends, so I can just watch her and think: ‘hey that’s my friend!’. Also Lara Ricote – whatever ‘it’ is, baby she’s got it! Genius vibes.

Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.

I performed once as a student, and I had to wear a special moon boot for the whole time, because I broke my ankle the month before at a silent disco (as if having to attend a silent disco wasn’t punishment enough). So I guess my best advice would be: don’t break your ankle.

Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe

Wake up. Spend the day flitting between huge excitement and abject fear. Perform my show to sold out crowds (I’ve written it down now, so please don’t embarrass me guys! You know what to do).

What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?

Being an audience member.

Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?

Somewhere very public so it’s easy for people to come up to you and say ‘omg I loved your show!’

Best thing about performing at the fringe?

Being the star of your own show every single day is just the most cool insane exciting privilege! This is what Lorraine must feel like.

Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?

Thank you for asking me. I have been talking so much about my show, and never get the chance to share my top tips for travelling around. I think my advice would be to plan ahead. If this helps at least one person, my job is done.

What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?

The things you need for your show. The things you need for your day-to-day life. Not Instagram.

What’s the secret to successful flyering?

Really good question. Can’t wait to read what other people have answered for this.

If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?

Instagram, baby! @__willowen

And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?

Really really good.
