Hello! Tell us about yourself?
My name is Dima. Dima Watermelon! Being originally from Ukraine, 9 years ago I came to Berlin for a master’s in Computer Science, stayed for techno parties and cheap beer. I immediately started doing stand-up comedy in order not to lose my sense of humor while integrating into German society. After many unsuccessful years of trying to become German, I eventually gave up on life, quit my day job as a software developer, and started doing comedy full-time! Now looking for a job back, as being funny in Germany doesn’t pay the bills.
My comedic style is a mix of absurdity, social commentary and some allegedly inappropriate jokes. Self-proclaimed inventor of mumble comedy. And yes, Watermelon is indeed my real surname, simply translated into English.
Tell us all about your show!
This show is about dreams, the absurdity of day-to-day existence, and why you should not take life too seriously. It’s a mix of jokes and stories about my personal life such as being an immigrant from Ukraine, living in Germany, discovering standup comedy and deciding to take on it as a career. Reactions of my friends and family to it. It’s all too tragic not to joke about it. As for Ukraine – humour was one of our most effective weapons from day one, so here I’m just doing my part by providing funny authentic takes on the state of the world.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
The name “Ukrainian Dream” is an allusion to the famous “American Dream”, I came up with this name when I was doing my solo show in NYC. Despite being a bit cheesy, it describes my show perfectly, as it’s about my dream of becoming a comedian, as well as a dream of Ukraine as a nation.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
The magic of Fringe is in the thrill of discovering incredible (or hilariously awful) acts you’ve never heard of. I’m ready to go with the flow and let the surprises roll in.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe.
I spent only 5 days at Fringe 2 years ago, the advice I’ve been given is to pace yourself, not to drink/party too much, as if you are doing a full run, it will get dreadful.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
Wake up, get some Scottish breakfast, do some admin at the coffee shop, go see a show, go do some flyering, maybe a couple of spots, do my own show, more spots, maybe another show, couple of drinks, go to bed. I hope it won’t be a groundhog day.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Less expectations, go with the flow, comfortable shoes/clothes.
Ok, where is your favorite place to eat at the Fringe?
10 to 10 in Delhi, it’s cheap, delishious and near to many venues.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Audiences.
Top tips for traveling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
Walking might be faster
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Rain jacket, powerbank, water bottle.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Quality flyers, use glossy paper, they are more shiny, more durable, kinda waterproof and attract more attention.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
Instagram is the best way to stay in touch @dimawatermelon
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
It’s very good
