Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hello! My name is Eleanor and I’m a Scottish comedian, writer and actor.
Tell us all about your show!
It’s called Haunted House and it’s all about ghosts! Specifically, the ghosts in my home town of Edinburgh, and the ghosts we all experience. It’s going to be scary AND funny.
How did you come up with the name for the show you’re taking to the fringe?
My dear friend and brilliant comic Josie Long once described Edinburgh as a ‘haunted dollhouse’ and I think about that a lot. I think Edinburgh is like a spooky theme park for some people. I’ll also be talking about all kinds of spooky things that happen in haunted houses. I just love haunted houses, basically.
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
So many. Literally anyone at Monkey Barrel or The Stand is a guaranteed excellent time. I’m not listing them individually cos I’ll miss someone and feel like a dick.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
I’ve done the Fringe so many times and I’m from Edinburgh, so I feel like Jack Torrence at the end of the Shining. I can never leave. Key advice would be: give yourself as much time off as possible, and join campaigns for better rights for locals and performers. Go and see stuff you wouldn’t normally see and never promise anyone you’ll go to their show – you’ll get too tired and forget.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I always try and do my show around midday (12.05pm this year) because I’m a morning person and I like a relatively sober, attentive audience. And I won’t be thinking about it all day. Then I will go and see some stuff and hang out with friends. I will try and do something completely un-Fringy on my days off.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Don’t take it too seriously. Don’t assume it will be good. Don’t go into it thinking it will change your life. Appreciate being in a place where you can see and experience art from all over the world. Be polite to locals and remember most of them are trying to do their normal jobs while you’re getting drunk!
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
My friend Nicole’s house. There are no comedians there.
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
Being in a bubble of creativity for a whole month with people you don’t normally see. Being able to chop and change and improve a show over the course of a month. Seeing stuff you never even knew existed.
Top tips for traveling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
Don’t overload your schedule, I know people love to ram in as much as possible, but if you’re stressed and tired you won’t be a good audience member, and comedians will notice. Also PLEASE don’t sneak out of a show to get to another show – leave at least an hour between shows.
You will never ever see everything at the Fringe anyway, so if you miss someone you love, support them when they visit your town on tour instead. Get a map and figure out which venues are near to each other. And plan where you’re going before you leave -it’s easy to get lost!
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Water. Paracetamol. Healthy snacks.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
I am terrible at flyering and I haven’t done it for years so I have no idea.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
@eleanormorton on Twitter @eleanormortoncomedy on Insta, @eleanormortonable on YouTube.
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Spooky. Silly. Soulful.
