Hello! Tell us about yourself?
I am a comedian who lives in New York coming back to Fringe for the 3rd time. The last time was in 2019 so I am eager to return. I have spent the past 13.5 years teaching chess in New York City as my day job while I do comedy. So it will be really fun to combine both of those parts of my life because my show is all about the game of Chess.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you are taking to Fringe?
Well…I wanted to call it Endgame but that is the highest grossing film of all time, a Taylor Swift song and a classic Samuel Beckett play and while I am excited about this show, that is some tough competition to overcome. Endgame is the final stages of a chess game, so when I considered the themes I thought After Endgame was best, because this show is about after the chess game is completed.
Have you done the Fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups of people performing at Fringe?
I have done Fringe twice, in 2017 and 2019. See as many shows as you can, get as much rest as you can,, enjoy flyering your show because it’s a part of the Fringe everyone is doing as well and enjoy every minute of being on stage no matter how many people are in the audience.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe?
Wake up. Go to a coffee shop. Write in my journal. Do Yoga. See a show. Flier my show. Perform my show. Take a shower. See a show. Do stand up. Have a pint. Go to bed. Repeat. And fully expect for all that to be interrupted by some spontaneous event, run in with an old friend or chance encounter that leads you on some wild adventure.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the Fringe?
Connecting with other likeminded people from all over the world. Seeing the work they are doing and not becoming self obsessed with your own show. Enjoy being a part of the whole festival.
Ok, where is your favorite place to eat at the Fringe?
I love English breakfast. And I love a small coffee shop and cafe that was close to my venue in 2019 called The Edinburgh Larder. The late-night crepes at the trucks are clutch.
Best thing about performing at the Fringe?
The quantity of shows. 27 in a row. You walk out of Fringe with such a tight well-crafted show by the time it’s done.
Top Trips for traveling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
I am less of a spreadsheet person and more of a plan one or 2 events and let word of mouth and spontaneity do the rest.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to Fringe?
A pen. A journal and A book to take your mind off your show and read in the Meadows.
What’s the secret to successful Flyering?
Human connection. Quality over quantity. Believing your show is worth coming to.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@KevinJamesDoyle on every platform.
Finally in three words – why should people come and see the show?
