Hello! Tell us about yourself?
Hi! I’m Andrew Doherty, a queer comedian originally from Manchester, specialising in narrative genre comedy. I used to be in a sketch duo called Megan from HR with Ambika Mod, who is now the famous successful star of One Day, and many people say I’m very well-adjusted to this fact.
Tell us all about your show!
Gay Witch Sex Cult is a spooky folk horror comedy about Kaelan Trough, a real estate agent investigating a mysterious island whilst dealing with problems in his relationship with his husband Jeremy. It’s at once a tribute to and parody of folk horror films, such as The Wicker Man and Midsommar.
How did you come up with the name for the show you’re taking to the fringe?
I threw four darts at a dictionary!!!
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
Lots! I’ve seen previews of Sarah Roberts’ debut which was super funny, and Alex Franklin is going to kill it again I’m sure. I’ve heard amazing things about Lil Wenker’s Bangtail so very excited for that. Also, I’ve seen Aidan Pittman do Dr. Dolittle Kills a Man twice now and it’s one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen, so go see that.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe?
This will be my fifth fringe, but first time solo and first in a while. Pace yourselves, plan your days, make sure you are having nights in and looking after yourself. There is an incredible Mac n Cheese stand near George Square, but the key message is expensive does not equal healthy.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I wake up and gently chastise myself for allowing all my lovers from the previous night to stay over. I cook them a hearty breakfast and send them on their way. I go for lunch at the Mac n Cheese stand near George Square, maybe catch a show, maybe just walk around Edinburgh. Run lines, see more shows, eat more Mac n Cheese.
My show this year is at 11pm so that’s a lot of day to fill beforehand. I’m guessing 10pm onwards I’ll be feeling sick from nerves and cheese, so I’ll try to focus and get in the zone. I do the show, celebrate with a quick Mac n Cheese, then head home.
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Outside of the Mac n Cheese place near George Square, remember Edinburgh is a full on city with an incredible history so go explore and enjoy the beautiful place for what it is.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
That’s a tricky one, but I think I’d have to say the Mac n Cheese place near George Square
Best thing about performing at the fringe?
That is hard, but I think it lets you make your show the best it can be. You’re doing it every day repeatedly to wildly different audiences, and you learn to work and cope and adapt with pretty much everything.
Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
If you can make a network of tunnels, or get a friend to give you access to theirs, it does speed things up.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
Rope. Candlestick. Revolver.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Remember to take it VERY personally if they don’t take a flyer- that is a DIRECT attack on you, on your family, and your sexuality, and you are allowed to call the police.
If people want to find out more about you, where can they follow you on social media?
@adohertycomedy on Instagram!
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Gay. Witch. Sex. (The fourth word would be theatre)
