Hello! Tell us about yourself?
My name’s Ria and I’m the director and co-producer of Rosie and Hugh’s Great Big Adventure.
Tell us all about your show!
It’s a wonderful new musical for 3-8 year old adventurers and their families, with music and lyrics by Nick Cope and book by Victoria Saxton. It’s a lovely story about a little girl called Rosie and her best friend Hugh the Hedgehog. They want it to be the last day of the summer holidays forever and so go on an adventure to get help from their friends in the forest – including a squirrel with a wobbly tooth, a little lizard and a rusty robot.
How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the fringe?
The show is based on songs by Nick Cope – Rosie and Hugh are both characters from two of Nick’s songs: ‘Little Grey Cloud’ and ‘Have you heard about Hugh’
What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?
I’m looking forward to seeing ‘I really do think this will change your life’ by Emma Louise-Howell and Hetty Hodgson.
Have you done the fringe before? What are the key pieces of advice you have been given or would give to new groups or people performing at the fringe. And if you haven’t, how are you gearing up for it?
I run The North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford and we’ve taken 2 shows to the fringe before: E8 by Marika Mckennell and Brown Boys Swim by Karim Khan – 2 pieces of new writing with E8 winning a Fringe First / Stage Award, and Brown Boys Swim winning a Fringe First / Popcorn Award. My advice would be to make sure that you love the show that you’re investing so much time in. It’s an exhausting process bringing a production to the Fringe, so it helps get you through if you really believe in why you’re there.
Talk us through your daily routine for a day at the Fringe
I’ll usually check emails while I’m having breakfast to make sure I’m on top of last minute ticket requests, and any press / industry messages about the show. I love a walk through the Meadows to clear my head and plan for the day, before a check-in on how flyering’s going, numbers for that day’s performance and then watching the show itself – which this year will be at midday at Pleasance Beyond. Afterwards I’d check in with the cast and then spend the afternoon / evening seeing other shows, plus doing lots of walking (- and last minute running).
What is the best way to enjoy yourself at the fringe?
Pace yourself. It’s ok to have an evening off, to rest, and to catch up with friends without seeing 10 shows a day.
Ok, where is your favourite place to eat at the Fringe?
Best thing about performing at the Fringe?
I’m always behind the scenes, but I have huge admiration for the many amazing artists who venture up to the festival each year to share new work and engage with different audiences.
Top tips for travelling around the Fringe and getting to shows on time?
Plan for more walking time than you think you need, and you’ll be fine.
What would be your top three items every performer must take to the fringe?
A watch.
Reusable water bottle.
Umbrella.
What’s the secret to successful flyering?
Whether it’s you flyering, or someone else, make sure the love and knowledge of the show is real.
If people want to find out more about you where can they follow you on social media?
@TheNorthWall on twitter (X), and @thenorthwall on instagram
And Finally in three words – Why should people come and see the show?
Musical fabulous joy.
