Today we speak to Ru Paul Drag Race UK season 4 winner Danny Beard who is heading out on tour across the UK with their band. The tour kicks off in September and is set to be a night of scandalous behaviour, lots of laughs, and an honest insight into what life’s really like in the limelight. I caught up with the star to find out what Danny has in store for audiences.
Hello Danny Beard lovely to meet you! Firstly, I want to personally say congratulations for winning Ru Paul’s Drag Race Season 4 – that must of been a surreal experience?
Thank you so much. It’s so bizarre that it was so long and it’s still so fresh in your mind.
What was your favourite thing about being on that show?
The fact I got to get up every single day and show off in front of cameras and just have so much fun. And then I get to watch it back and watch it with everyone and have more fun with it. It was such a magical experience. I obviously couldn’t have done it without everyone there, the team were incredible, and they let me be that way. I’ve worked on TV shows before where the camera men were old, old, old men and I’ve felt a little bit uncomfortable but even though the camera men on Drag Race were old men they were very accepting and open, and I just was able to be a tit.
Your outfits and styles are outstanding – where you do you get your inspirations from?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. The look on the promo for Drag Race came from the Liver Bird, I mean I didn’t look anything like one when I got dressed but that was the first spark of inspiration, but it can come from anywhere really. I never thought I was fashionable until recently and now I think I’m really fashionable and really modest about it too.
You are going on tour! What can you tell us about it?
It’s called Straight Expectations – a really gritty musical comedy that explores really deep and dark profound themes about how disgusting straight people are. Only kidding. Expect a full live band and a night of killer vocals, snappy comedy, put downs and pick me ups.
How long does it take you to get ready for a show?
It takes around 2 hours to get into drag but the reality is it’s however long I’ve got plus an extra 30 mins to work because when I’m in drag I’m late but when I’m out of drag I’m early. Drag never goes to plan there’s always a leaky eye or drooly mouth.
Do you have many costume changes as part of your show?
I’ll keep it mysterious – wait and see.
How do you warm up for a show?
A couple of Fireballs, a chat with me mum on the phone, back scratch from my fella and a few stretches to pick up my vape and put it to my mouth.
How do you wind down afterwards?
A couple of Fireballs, a chat with me mum on the phone, back scratch from my fella and a few stretches to pick up my vape and put it to my mouth.
What is your favourite thing about going on tour?
It really sounds like a cheesy answer, but it really is seeing all the different people across the country. People are in a time where they are choosing between seeing me or seeing their favourite pop artist or another drag queen and the fact, they are picking me over them means they are trusting me to give them a good night and it does make you feel like a superhero.
Especially when you meet them afterwards and they have cried and laughed and gone through all the emotions you have gone through the night and you can do that night after night.
What is the most challenging?
Having to share a van with five musicians that all stink. Talented but smelly!
Finally – why should people come to see you live?
Because if you don’t, you’re homophobic!
