If there is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television, books and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.
I always like finding improv being mentioned in places you don’t expect it. However, when I read one of Ant and Dec’s autobiographies I should of expected it as they do so much live television. Instead, the way they talk about it was not positive. Even though this is the case, I still think it is important to mention in the thread as I love seeing negative responses as well as can lead a good debate.
I find this quite amusing – to be fair this was around the time they were doing Byker Grove so it was very early on in their career but it still makes me laugh. It also brings up a really important discussion about improv that sometimes we forget – Improv can be daunting.
When you are not used to using your brain in a different and unique way – it can be incredibly scary and not to everyone’s taste. I remember even to this day, the horror in some people’s faces in the first improv lesson I ever took in, ironically, Newcastle.
If you are someone who is shy or not a fan of being in the limelight, improv can really throw you into the deep-end. Some of the people I did my first improv course with were there because they wanted to boost their confidence in their jobs such as the council so it was completely out of their comfort zone.
It is easy to look at this quote as a negative but it is important to look at it as the hellish feeling it can bring to those who are not comfortable with it.
