Improv

Improv Corner – Improv in the Media – Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes

There is one thing that fascinates me about improv and that is how it is portrayed in Television and Film. This is becoming more and more apparent in recent years because the comedy art form is sort of in fashion. There are some interesting topics that we can gain from these ways they are displayed so every so often we are going to look at different scenes from different shows and films.

Robson Green’s Weekend Escapes

I find it really interesting when you can accidently stumble on something in a random television show that can relate to the world of improv and that is exactly what happened with this programme I am talking about today. I came across Robson Green’s Escapes by accident and ended up enjoying some of the episodes as it gave a great look at the North East.

In season 1, episode 13, Robson Green takes actress Charlie Hardwick to the beach in Easington near Hawthorn Viaduct to meet Nicola who has a project that helps people become creative on the beach called Fishes and Wishes. Artists and creatives have to use materials from the beach that they are on and create artistic works of art that they then post online. The thing that I really liked about this that I felt that was important in improv is that it makes the person reconnect with their inner child and thin of the world of play.

The main aim of the project is to allow the creatives mind to go wild and using unusual natural objects to come up with fun and creative ideas. This is similar to improv, when you first start doing it you have to get into the mindset that it is all about play and releasing yourself from the adult day to day world. It can be really difficult to look at the world in that perspective of play but when you get the knack of it (like Robson Green eventually does) you can have so much fun with the comedy or art form.
