The one thing I love about music is that everyone has their own story to tell – the musician, the lyrics, the way the fans decipher them and also the way a song can also create a memory or a meaning to someone. That is what this new article is all about. Each fortnight, we will take a look at a different song and I will take you as a trip down memory lane as to what it means to me. Welcome to Music Memories.
Track: Steal My Girl
Artist: One Direction
Original Release Date: 2014
I was never really a fan of One Direction – in fact I couldn’t stand them. The only song I ended up liking was Best Song Ever which I will talk about at some point in the future on this article. However, when you are put into a situation where things are negative, your opinions of a band or a song can change.
I lived in Newcastle in 2015, I had a great time there apart from one thing – my first apartment. I only had one day to go up and find somewhere to live and came across a flat I really liked and was lucky enough to get it – all wasn’t what it see,s and when I moved in all hell broke loose.
The top floor flat neighbour was a DJ who decided that everyone should hear their music at top loudness all through the night. They had an incredibly loud bass and it even gets me agitated and stressed just thinking about it. Whilst it made me hate music, it also made me heavily rely on my own to try and calm down or at least try and get some sleep.
I find in certain situations that pop music can bring peace to your inner self and it is one of the reasons that I only started listening to One Direction in the first place – to help me escape with silly music. I would put on One Direction on my headphones and have a silly dance around the house to try and cheer myself up. This specific song I felt helped a lot and I used to like the beat of it as I found it fun and calming. It would definitely boost my morale.
It is amazing how music can help – sure it didn’t resolve the situation ( i moved out and found an amazing apartment the complete other side of town) and it gave me small pockets of hope when I needed it.
