Playing The Favourite – INTERVIEW – The Haptics

Welcome to the feature where we talk to musicians about some of their favourite things about the industry. Today we speak to the band The Haptics, who have recently released the EP Zero Gravity. Today we speak to singer Jin Gilbert and find out about favourite things.

What is your Favourite:

Song you have written:

My favorite song is probably a tie between “Zeroes” and “Mouse”. I really love the vocal melodies and guitar line in “Zeroes” but “Mouse” just hits really hard!

Lyric:

“The world outside has lots its sound/the voices carry me no meaning/spirits high, it brings me down/I’m not quite as well as I’m feeling” is my favourite lyric, and that’s from “Zeroes”. I think it sums up that a feeling of hopelessness and accompanying mania quite well.

Musician:

My favorite musician is Roy Orbison, R.I.P. I think he sounds like a lovely person and his voice is so incredibly beautiful. His songs are timeless.

Film or television show:

I’m a big horror fan. I can watch scary movies all day, every day. My favorite TV show of all time is probably The Twilight Zone.

Venue to perform at:

I really liked performing at Buddha’s in Vancouver, B.C. It was a legendary punk venue that recently was very sadly lost to a fire. The sound was great, and the vibe was awesome. Definitely one to remember. My condolences to their team.

Item to take with you on tour:

Toothbrush and toothpaste. Gotta stay fresh.

Instrument:

My favorite instrument is the piano. I grew up playing classical piano and it’s my go-to for relaxing or working out stress.

Song to play live:

Oh, definitely “Mouse” by far! It’s super high-energy and fun to sing. It’s sort of crass and noisy sounding.

Album by another musician:

My favorite album of all time? That’s a tough one. Probably “Garbage” by Garbage. That really shaped my teen years. Such a classic. I still rock out to it, years later.

Memory of tour:

I have so many great memories with my boys! Probably the meals we’ve shared, not to be too cheesy. We have a lot of great talks and warm moments in those minutes and hours before we play.

Era for music:

I mean.. I’m gonna sound pretty old-school but you just can’t beat Beethoven. I mean, imagine his music coming out and being fresh? Rocking out to the victrola? That would’ve been vicious.

Part of making a record:

I love being in the studio. We make a whole day of recording each day and get drinks, food, the whole deal. It’s like being in summer camp. I will say, it’s very tiring! But completely worth it.

Thing about performing at festivals:

The energy of the crowd, by far! Festivals definitely carry a special energy.

Quote:

“A closed mouth doesn’t get fed.” A very wise man told me that once.

Thing about the music industry at the moment:

How many people are being heard! Online platforms have really enabled listeners to tune in to musicians from all over, doing all sorts of far-out things.

Thing about 2023?

My favorite thing about last year.. Releasing this EP!
