Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
“P.C.H.” is a nod to California Culture and the laid-back, golden haze of an endless summer. It features our signature harmonies and lush, layered guitars. We hope that it imparts a cool, Laurel Canyon vibe to the listener.
The song was conceived and written by D.D. McGrane. It was inspired by nostalgia for simpler times when sunshine and optimism seemed to be everywhere, and the future stretched before us like the iconic and limitless Pacific Coast Highway.
Her lyrics also contain a subtle, darker undercurrent reminding us to be fully immersed in the present because the past is ephemeral and can never be recaptured.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Wow! That’s a difficult choice. Ask us on any given day and you’ll probably get a different answer…
Right now, we would have to say “Ven”. It’s a Spanish language song that D.D. wrote for a Quinceanera and it’s just a joy to perform. Upbeat and uplifting with authentic Mexican flavor, it’s very celebratory and always gets a great response.
D.D. is proud to showcase her Latina heritage and we’re thrilled to say that we have more Spanish language songs in the pipeline. C.J. isn’t a native speaker, so these take a little longer to be performance ready.
“P.C.H.” is our debut single and we’re stoked! It was a long, and sometimes arduous, recording process and we were fortunate to have the guidance and expert ear of our amazing producer, Rob Campanella. We’re so excited to finally be able to bring our musical style and vision to the world.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
D.D. likes to joke that “The songs just come pouring out!”. Fortunately, she hasn’t had to struggle too much for inspiration.
Sometimes, we find that the longest, most difficult part of a song is in finalizing the harmonies and other musical arrangements.
“Lenses”, a song reflecting on social justice, took us months to work out. After many attempts, we decided to put the song away and just let it marinate. When we revisited it later, it seemed to have evolved on its own! We were suddenly able to hear it with fresh ears and everything fell into place.
“Lenses” has since become one of our favorites for its relevant message and gospel feel. Our dream is to someday record it with a full church choir as backup.
Your most emotional track:
“I Know How to Love” is a heartfelt, power anthem that we and the audience really connect with. Like all the best “love gone wrong” songs, it’s raw, bluesy, and full of sass. And the bridge of the song is a smooth, soulful surprise.
The best lyric you have ever written:
D.D. would say that her best lyrics are in the ballad, “Two Leaves”. Whenever we perform this tune, she invariably receives the most positive feedback about the poetic, symbolic meaning intertwined within the lyrics.
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
We love performing and can’t get enough! It’s hard to describe the exhilaration of standing in front of a crowd to create a great audience experience and share a small piece of yourself. It’s an absolute privilege. If we’re being totally honest here, it’s crazy combination of excitement, gratitude, and a wee bit of stage fright!
The hardest track to play live:
We have a few tracks that are pretty challenging.
D.D. has been experimenting with some jazzy, new chord combinations for “Sunshine” to stretch her guitar playing muscles and “Wondering”, a complex, 50’s inspired piece, takes D.D.’s full concentration to balance a clean guitar performance with the emotional connection and delivery of the lyrics.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
C.J. can’t function without her SleepPhones; essential for a good night’s rest listening to music, meditation or podcasts.
D.D. carries a talisman: a crumpled receipt from the purchase of her guitar to always remind her that it’s never too late for a second chance at your dreams.
Describe your fans in three words:
Enthusiastic Supportive Family
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
“Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton. Enough said.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
We have big goals and aspirations for 2024!
We’re actively seeking more live gigs and we’re eager for all opportunities, be it a music festival, state fair or as the opening act for a headliner. (We’re really trying to manifest that last one!)
Our current goal is to get busy producing more quality tracks with solid melodies, catchy hooks and beautiful harmonies that people can groove to. We want to get those tunes out to our fans as soon as possible, and with any luck, expand our growing audience.
We have a lot of material to choose from. D.D. has compiled a huge catalogue of amazing songs incorporating an eclectic range of influences from rock, pop and Americana to an occasional hint of jazz with retro stylings and she continues to consistently create.
