I have always been a huge fan of podcasts, I have listened to podcasts as far back at 2008 I think it was although I never really listened to them until a few years later. My first real introduction to the world of podcasts was when I was in my last year of university and had to spend hours in the classroom with two of my friends working on our coursework into the very early hours of the morning. It would just be the three of us, myself, Matt and Tom and whilst we were working, the podcasts of The Ricky Gervais show was blasting out into the room. It was in the moment I realised that podcasts can create so much comedy and can really sort of act like a ‘best friend.’ It also sort of created a special bonding moment between the three of us and I am still very much close friends with them today.
Over the years, I have learnt that podcasts can really be so much more then the ‘laugh’ and whilst I do listen to a lot of podcasts to help get me through the tough days, the good days and the times I have to work through the night, I also have found that it can be so much more.
Over the years, the idea of what a podcast is has obviously developed, especially with the pandemic and so many more have arisen and so much more content is now available and in a saturated market it can be hard to find really good shows. I have learnt that sometimes episodes of certain podcasts can really have an effect and over time I have shown my appreciation for these episodes on my social media channels.
I have previously spoken about the podcast episode that inspired me to start writing this feature, and you can read more about it here. This week we are talking about a podcast that I find incredibly inspiring with it’s interesting conversations.
Podcast Episodes That Changed My Life –
Episode: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Podcast: Backstage: In the Envelope
I find that inspiration can come from anywhere, whether it is a quote, a song, a television show of even a podcast conversation, there is so much out there that when you hear it or see it can create a light bulb moment and make you want to do something or makes you feel stronger about something. Well, today we are going to talk about a podcast episode that featured a guest that whenever I hear a conversation with them, I go away feeling more empowered and a hell of a lot more creative.
“…if you have any interest in the creativity process of films or really interested in an actor behind the mask then I highly recommend this podcast as it is really in depth...”
There is one person that became an inspiration to me a while ago, no, it is not because he has been in some fantastic films, no it is not the fact that I accidentally gate crashed a film set of his in NYC and saw him filming a scene with some taxis. The thing that started to lead me in becoming a fan creatively of the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt was actually his side project Hit Record.
JGL Is such an inspiration – the way he highly talks about editing is such a huge deal for me and his approach to acting as a whole is absolutely fascinating. The fact that an actor speaks highly of editing is so exciting is it really highlights what editors can do as a whole. talking about having a lot of moments of quitting acting and returning for different reasons and jobs.
When I starting to feel lost in direction creatively there is always one person that I try to listen to on a podcast and that is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Why you ask? Well, you listen to an interview with him and then tell me that you do not feel inspired creatively afterwards. He is so inspiring because he is so passionate about his art that it can really inspire others to do the same – you only need to look at the work that he has been producing with his website Hit Record.
Backstage is an American entertainment industry trade publication, that has a podcast that you can listen to called In the Envelope. In the introduction it says that it is a podcast for actors but I have to disagree – if you have any interest in the creativity process of films or really interested in an actor behind the mask then I highly recommend it as it is really in depth. I cannot remember how I came across it but since i have, I have gone on to listen to many of them as they are incredibly insightful.

This is a really great episode of In The Envelope as it really looks at the film industry in a whole different perspective and that is why I find JGL incredibly inspiring as he is honest, has an opinion and also is obsessed with creativity, that is why it is so good.
If you are looking for a podcast where the actor is the main focus then I highly recommend this show as you will really be listening to an interesting conversation.
