Tell us about:
Your latest single you have released:
War Games was written by Jimi Chialoufas just after Russia invaded Ukraine. He’d demoed the instrumental, then on a flight to Cyprus, couldn’t access his Apple music, so wrote the lyrics to the instrumental on the flight.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
Our First Single was West Was Won (which will be the first track on new album ‘Trickle Down Punkenomics) People seemed to like it, especially the mocking of Donald Trump in the lyrics.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
Grown Men. This was the last song we wrote for the album and wasn’t going to be included, however we went back into the studio to add it. If Idles did a Rage Against The Machine song, this would be it! The verses repeat 3 separate issues we feel people on the right wing and left wing will hear and have completely different reactions too. Grown men don’t cry, in fact they’d rather die – Grown me aren’t gay, that’s what religions say – Grown men must fight, to make it a good night.
Your favourite song to play live:
Grown man is our fav original as it gets an instantly visceral response from the audience due to the lyrics. California Uber Alles (by the dead kennedys) is the best cover, it drives the people wild as it climaxes!
The song that was the longest to write and why?
War Games was the longest, purely because Jimi had done the instrumental a year or so earlier and tried several different lyric combinations with it. It was only after Russia invaded Ukraine he had the chorus and thus the theme of the song. The riff is dark an heavy – different to a lot of our music, so needed something equally dark lyrically.
Your most emotional track:
Animal Farm is played on acoustic guitar an with an orchestra, which is pretty out there for a british punk band. It is about society looking at what it has allowed itself to become and accepting it with no way to change.
The best lyric you have ever written:
‘You say you want peace, but only if you keep a piece’ from War Games
Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:
It depends which member! Pye and Jimi are usually pissed and try to have fun throughout the show, Troy and Dec are much more focused on playing the correct notes in the correct order!
The hardest track to play live:
Animal farm. We don’t like the idea of backing tracks but can’t carry around an orchestra, so it would have to be played in time to a click, which as a punk band trying to create a riot and after several beers, becomes an impossible challenge, so we just play it over the PA as our outro.
Essential items you always take on tour with you?
We have turned up to gigs having forgotten to take drums, amps and pedal boards, so just remembering what we need to play the show would be a big improvement.
Describe your fans in three words:
Ready to Fight.
A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:
Public Enemy, The Clash, Nirvana and Dead Kennedys are probably the bands biggest influences, but ‘White Man in Hammersmith Palais’ by the Clash is just the perfect song. It’s punk, it’s reggae and it has the lyric ‘If Adolf Hitler flew in today, they’d send the limousine anyway’ – this was 1978. Now think about dictators and terrorist leaders the UK and EU leaders have rolled out the red carpet for in the past decade. Society hasn’t learnt or changed.
What we can look forward to from your band this year:
War games was out September 1st on all streaming platforms via rexius records, ‘Trickle Down Punkenomics’ our 12 song debut album is out October 27 and we are gonna tour around the south east of the UK in November, check out our Insta or Facebook for details, and remember to keep fighting the power!
