Tell Us about:
Your latest single you have released:
“G.I. Joe” is a three-minute hip hop comedy track. One verse, 104 bars, no chorus, all one stream-of-consciousness series of rhymes. A steadily building flow, braggadocious metaphors, and no real unifying theme. I’m aiming for Christmas number one.
Your first single and how you felt when it was released:
I released raps through YouTube and TikTok videos way before I released singles in the conventional sense. The first one I put up was me rapping in my flat in the first lockdown – I had no expectation that it would reach more than a few of my followers. When it went viral and hit the front page of Reddit, I was delighted. It was the first time I realised that I might actually be able to make scripted raps which were both funny and surprising.
Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:
I have a special fondness for “Posh British Boy Raps In Car”. That’s probably my most viral video of all time. I enjoyed the challenge of rapping double-time over a drum and bass beat. I love DnB, so the idea of spitting fast, intricate rhymes about quite unbelievable/pathetic brags really amused me.
Your favourite song to play live:
I have never performed any of these songs live, because most of them have wordplay which is so dense and fast it would require subtitles.
The song that was the longest to write and why?
The three gun tracks, in total, was probably three years worth of writing gun bars in a note in my phone. Then a few days before recording each track, slapping them all together in a word document. Turns out, there’s lots of slang words in rap music for “gun”.
Your most emotional track:
I mean none of them are sincere. But I enjoyed playing with faux RnB-style eroticism in “Sexy Time”. I think it’s funny to act aroused but completely incompetently.
The best lyric you have ever written:
I wrote a track called “If Eminem Was English” a few years ago. I’m very proud of these two bars:
Confessed my motive for getting gently toasted
Thirsting for a cheeky half like Lembit Opik
Just for how niche the reference is.
