Today’s Featured Artist – INTERVIEW – King Of Cups

Tell us about:

Your latest single you have released:

Shaun: “Back To You” is about when I met my wife. I met her twelve days before I was going to move to a different city. So, I had to turn the rizz to eleven. Somehow it worked. Anyhow, I constantly thought, why am I moving? Why am I moving from this lady? Well, lucky for me, I moved a mile from her mom’s house. So, we ended up together, and our relationship started as long distance.

After a while, I came back to work in her area, and we’ve been together ever since. The song was released on our 10-year dating anniversary, so that’s super special! In fact, she sang backup vocals in the song! We also have a Nigerian choir singing backup on the song!

Your first single and how you felt when it was released:

“Back To You” is King of Cups’ first single, which feels fantastic. We’re finally releasing music that we’re happy with. We’ve released other music under a different name, but this one is our first as KoC. We’re so stoked about it!

Your favourite song that you have created that is an album track:

Oh man, “Back To You” is amazing, but so is the next track we have coming out in September 2023. “Missing You” is incredible too. It’s way too hard to choose. I will have to say both of these because they both get stuck in your head.

Your favourite song to play live:

I will have to say, “Missing You,” because I get to play guitar on that one. “Back To You” is a lot of fun too, but I’m just singing. “Back To You” is taxing to sing too.

The song that was the longest to write and why?

“Back To You” took us eleven years to complete. Bryan wrote the music to it in 2011 and it took me eleven years to be good enough to sing on it. I needed to complete a few years of voice lessons. It also took me time to learn to write music that is extremely relatable too. I had to rerecord the vocals for this one a couple of times too. It took a little while before I was able to get the melody down too. It’s a tough one!

Your most emotional track:

Aw man, that’s a tough question. “Reflections” featuring Promise Game is about my brother’s fiancée, who treats our mom awful. “Back To You” is about moving away from the love of your life, but moving back, because it’s right.” “Missing You” is about the loved ones who have passed away. They all have extremely strong emotions. I’m not sure which one is the most emotional. I believe “Back To You” is the most positive, “Reflections” is the most angry, and “Missing You” is the most mournful.

The best lyric you have ever written:

I’m so proud of many of my lyrics. I like “You’re proof that dreams come true, home, it’s always where the heart is” in “Back To You.” “Missing You” has some great lines too. I don’t know if I could tell you those yet!

Describe the feeling you get when you walk on stage to do a show:

I feel like I got a job to do. It feels great to see all those people there waiting to see us perform. We have to meet their expectations, so we do!

The hardest track to play live:

“Back To You” is hands down one of the hardest tracks to sing. It’s completely doable, though. Its timing is difficult, and it sits mostly in my upper register. It’s a fun track to sing. I enjoy singing it, and I’m getting better at it, so it won’t be hard in the future!

Essential items you always take on tour with you?

Probably some healthy food and something to keep my body clean. No one likes being around smelly dudes.

Describe your fans in three words:

Awesome, amazing, and incredible.

A song by another artist or band you wish you had written:

I don’t know if I have an answer for this one. How about the music John Williams wrote for Star Wars? Or Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. I’d be a millionaire!

What we can look forward to from your band this year:

We’re releasing the music video for “Back To You” either this week or next! It’s the best music video we’ve made yet. It’s amazing! Then in September 2023, “Missing You” will be out. People are going to love both!
