Hello! Tell us about John Callaghan’s Cabaret Electro.

Peculiar electronic songs presented with theatrical flourishes like ingenious costumes, arty videos etc. People who like unusual but catchy music can enjoy the songs, which I’m very proud of… and everyone else can come and laugh at how weird it all is.

How did you come up with the name of your show that you’re taking to the Camden Fringe?

John Callaghan is a very common name (my dad apparently wanted to call me Finbar) so I needed something that gave people an idea what to expect.

Tell us a little bit about your style of show.

It’s been described as “Aphex Twin meets music hall” and “psychedelic electro-pop panto”. I can say with confidence that there’s no other show quite like it.

What will your set be about?

Optimism, entropy, time-wasting, nudity, self-actualisation, emotional alienation… everything that makes up my personality. After all, don’t we all just want to be understood?

Please appreciate how hard I fought the urge to say “my set will be about an hour”.

What other acts are you looking forward to seeing at the fringe?

Arch-punster Darren Walsh’s show 3rd Rock From The Pun will undoubtedly be good value. If you like puns.

Have you done the fringe before? What have been some of your favourite shows to date and why?

It’s my first time at the Camden Fringe after many years at the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes.

What advice would you give to others who want to perform at Camden Fringe next year?

Let’s see if I can do it successfully this year first!

What is the best thing about performing at the Camden Fringe?

Music is self-expression and the immediacy of communicating that is very rewarding.

Favourite one liner you have done in a show and why?

“Time is the currency we exchange for memories.” I always write that in the book they pass around at weddings.

Who would be your ultimate dream audience member?

Sometimes I wonder if it’s all a dream… Although it’s perhaps natural to imagine the perfect audience member is oneself, it’s actually more rewarding to connect with new people who’ve discovered something unexpected.

The iconic image of the Camden Fringe is the Pigeon – if you could call this years pigeon a name to represent its style what would it be and why?

I’ve just looked up the Latin name for a pigeon and it’s columba livia. So I’d say either Colm or Livvy.
